Video Surfaces Of Carmen Carrera Saying 'Tranny' In Interview

A new video has surfaced of transgender star Carmen Carrera using the word "tranny" in an interview, which wouldn't necessarily be problematic if Carrera weren't one of the leading proponents of removing the word from everyday speech. (Last week, Carrera appeared to target RuPaul and his supporters for their continued use of the word.)

So here's Carmen using the word in an interview:

It doesn't appear that she's using "tranny" in a pejorative way. Does that make it okay?

When is acceptable to use the term? Or is it ever?

I'm pretty in tune with things, and it seems like the word "tranny" has become taboo practically overnight. Like a damned light switch. No tranny that I know has ever had any issue with the word. It seems pretty clear that this is someone's attempt to get some press by making a political statement about it.

Rupaul would never use the word with any bad intention or feeling. She is about love and not taking life to seriously!

Ugly, dirt, spic cunt!

Tourrettes or something?

So do you hate all Hispanics or just Carmen?

You've got it wrong, Instinct.  Her advocacy to remove the word from everyday speech, doesn't make it wrong for her to use it, any more than my advocacy to remove "faggot" from everyday speech makes it wrong for me to use it.  Why are you stirring the shit, Instinct?  What have you posted in the last few months... years... to make me thing you're nothing more than a garbage rag?

The word is ours to use period. This is what wrong with America is people like Carmen who do things just to be on tv shows or to simple be talked about. I am going to say tranny as long as I live and no stupid drag queen who thinks she is better than the rest can stop me.

In a recent interview, Carmen stated that it is okay to use the term amoungst friends in community spaces. That is different than advocating for it's widespread use amoungst the general public. which is what RuPaul is doing.

Words are not trademarked in that way. You can't use it among certain audiences and restrict it from others. The best way to eliminate a word you don't like, is to stop using it yourself. That goes for the N-word, Slut, Bitch, Whore and all the other trashy terms that people throw around.

A show featuring drag queens on a TV station for gay people is a "community space" so GTFOI.  If she is so damn concerned about not being respected as a woman, she needs to quit performing as a drag queen as drag is female impersonation.  Tranny.

People do change, but, Carmen should never have been using the word "tranny" before if she had on obvious issue with it.  You should not be using words that offend you just to fit into a group, rather it be transsexuals, drag queens, or whatever.  If you have an apparent problem with a word like "tranny" from when ever the issue arose, don't you think you would have tried to show that concern before you get your surgery and try to become of the spotlight in reversing the usage of the word, and trying to bring on some kind of upheaval like a civil right issue.  You could tell that Carmen had some issues going on during Rupaul's Drag Race, you could tell she was not very happy, comfortable, etc.  All of which would be slightly expected as she was a pre-op transsexual, but, she could have used that time for her platform.  Carmen has every right to come out and state her view and opinion over the use of the word "tranny", but, I do not feel she needs to try to take down and condemn all the people before her who have fought the fight, as she is, and who have paid their dues, and trying to be happy with being who their are, as she should be, as well.  There will be controversies and fighting over language for the rest of eternity, this is nothing new, I just think that Carmen should have stood up long before this and she needs to stop attacking Rupaul.  Rupaul is not the only person in the community, culture, and life saying the word "tranny" so openly.

Certain words and phrases are often used in a personal way between friends and not to put anyone down..In a lot of conversations I have with my friends the word tranny is a familar word to describe friends..I have  occassionally referred to myself as a tranny, instead of transgender or transexual so it depends on the circumstances....

I'm really glad that people keep posting this video. It's appeared many times on RuPaul's Facebook page in the last few days. What the video shows is that someone can be brainwashed into thinking that a slur is OK through over-exposure to it. It is this over-exposure that concerns me every time that RuPaul opens his mouth to support the use of the word. Carmen has evolved as a human being since this video was made. She now understands how hurtful it is to many, many trans women and is using her position to speak out. All the haters on her Facebook page will not stop her because she is speaking the truth that she has learned through her journey of personal growth. I wish RuPaul a similar journey of discovery.

Blah blah fucken blaaaaah she's an idiot and needs to get the fuck over herself surgery don't help ugly.

This video was recorded before Carmen transitioned. People are allowed to change their positions. I’ve changed mine. Before this whole fiasco I would have not really thought twice about saying “faggot” even in a friendly non-offensive way. But being on the other side of that, you understand that those words aren’t necessary especially when they can offend people.

This entire situation is about respect. You don’t have to agree with Carmen, or even like what she has to say but respect the fact that not all trans women work in nightlife or the adult entertainment industry and some people whether rightfully or wrongly, have only experienced these words when they’re being used to attack them. So because of that, they have a specific feeling about them. All the girls I’ve seen come out and defend these words are girls that either work in or are part of nightlife extensively. Try to think of being in a situation where you only ever heard those words when they’re being used as slurs. I know everyone’s going to give me the ‘words  don’t have power” rant” but when people with power use these words as grounds to oppress, whether we give them power or not actually doesn’t matter.

I’m not offended by the words but I understand the people that are. Why is it so hard for you to? digging up an old video of someone is very late. A lot of politicians that were anti-gay and said heinously homophobic things came out later in support of gay marriage when they discovered their family member was gay. Are you going to really judge them on what happened back when they were homophobic or accept them for how they feel now?

Kat, have several seats.

well said Kat

Then don't use the word "gay" because that's the only word that has ever been used to attack me and I am offended by it.  Please edit your post to remove gay and only use the term homosexual.  Homo is not sufficient as that too can be derogatory.  Actually, don't use homosexual either, just say "not heterosexual".

Don't waste your time. These fools don't understand anything that isn't tranny related. They only care about their own petty issues. They could care less about any real issue plaguing the transgender community, instead they want attention to be drawn to idiotic affairs, like that of Carmen's lame ass.

what are you, like 12?

This is just a way of exerting power and control over Carmen Carrera. That is embarrassing.

This is obviously a very old video. As this conversation has progressed we've all learned to hear each other better and have each progressed our own personal politic. Unless you are a super privileged entitled gay man, then you just bitch and say terribly offensive things in response to any call out.

It looks like a video from when he was considering himself a drag queen and not started the transition.. .

No it does not make it okay. She needs to get a clue that if she is going to deem something offensive she needs to not say the word. I love the word Tranny.
