Which A-List Actor Passed On The Iconic Lead Role In 'Philadelphia'?

On December 23, Philadelphia, one of the most important films in LGBT and American history celebrates its 20th anniversary. Members of the award-winning cast, director Jonathan Demme and screenwriter Ron Nyswaner will head to Columbia University Medical Center for the "Philadelphia Twenty Years Later: Narrative and the Epidemic" panel on November 12. One renowned Oscar winning actor who could've been there will be absent, however.

According to Nyswaner, Daniel Day Lewis was offered the role of Andrew Beckett, which ended up giving Tom Hanks an Oscar in the Best Actor category. Nyswaner, who sat down with NewNowNext this week, says that Lewis passed on the role.

Can you imagine Philadelphia starring anyone but Tom Hanks??
