STYLE GUYDE: The Hills Are Alive PDF Print

The hills of Litchfield County were alive with the sound of creating “Obsession” - Instinct’s fashion story for the July issue.  Litchfield County is home to my weekend home (in Washington, Connecticut - where the story was shot) and the homes of a few other people you might know (including Meryl Streep, Laura Linney, Candace Bushnell, Patti Lupone, Christine Baranski, Oscar de la Renta, and Henry Kissinger).  Located less than two hours outside of Manhattan (in the northwest corner of Connecticut), Litchfield County is a 945-square-mile realm of rolling hills and unspoiled farmland - making it the perfect location for a photo shoot!

Faster than you could say “Supermodel Road Trip”, the photographer (Vincent Dilio), groomer (William Murphy) and model (Sam Saffman from Ford Men) were on their way to my house for a two-day shoot in mid-May praying for the sun to come out (and stay out) so that the pictures would look like they were taken in the heat of the summer.

Speaking of heat, even though Sam actually comes from a place much larger than Washington, Connecticut (population: 3,596) – that would be Leeds, the fastest growing city in the United Kingdom (population: 761,100) - his incredible good looks, quiet charm, and (let’s not forget his) cute accent would make you obsess over him in any location.

Location, location, location.  After four summers without a pool, my boyfriend finally caved in last year (I always get what I want – eventually).  In case you’ve already forgotten, this is the HILLS of Litchfield County – meaning, it’s not exactly the easiest place in which to put in a pool.  Our pool took almost all of last summer to complete (they started in April and finished in August – the Friday right before Labor Day weekend)  – and included eight days of blasting (the aforementioned hills) with dynamite to actually carve out a place for it.  Doesn’t it make an excellent backdrop for Sam to show off his killer abs and Buckler swimsuit (see photo)?

The hills of Litchfield County were also alive with the sounds of Pilobolus – the modern dance company (which traces its origins back to 1971) is based in Washington Depot, Connecticut and held its 5th Annual Ball last month at a private home with 270 degrees of uninterrupted views.  Well, the views actually were interrupted by the four male dancers (clad only in nude g-strings – see photo) performing Ocellus - one of the 85 works in the company’s repertoire.  You’ve probably heard of Pilobolus before – they performed at the Academy Awards in 2007, bending and contorting their bodies behind a translucent screen to form iconic scenes from such movies as Little Miss Sunshine, Happy Feet and The Devil Wears Prada.

PRIZE PATROL!

You’re dying to know what we used to protect Sam’s (very exposed) skin from the harsh summer sun during the “Obsession” photo shoot, right?

The groomer kept gently flicking Sam’s face throughout the day with a super convenient, super chic, retractable brush applicator containing Instant Mineral SPF 45 from Peter Thomas Roth.  This talc-free mineral powder provides maximum protection against the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB infrared rays with a residue-free, transparent, matte finish (meaning you’ll look more hot than bothered).

Instant Mineral SPF 45 is one of the latest products from Peter Thomas Roth – who launched his company back in 1993.  About 100 years ago, Peter's family owned and operated resort spas in Hungary.  Today, Peter blends old Hungarian healing philosophies (derived from the many muds and minerals found in that nation’s famous thermal springs) with 21st century skin care technologies and ingredients “to create effective skin care that does what it promises to do!”.

Now, there’s no guarantee that Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 45 will make you look as hot as Sam (that’s called genetics) -  but it will stop you from returning to work on Monday morning with a bright red nose after your beach weekend in Laguna/Fire Island/Saugatuck/Provincetown.

Want to try it for yourself?  E-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with “Peter Thomas Roth” in the subject line and tell us in 100 words or less about your plans for the summer.  The first 10 entries (with a valid e-mail, home address and telephone number) will win a .12oz. brush applicator of Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 45 – which retails for $30.  Only one entry/winner per household please.

Check out the rest of Peter Thomas Roth’s extensive product range at   www.peterthomasroth.com.  The comprehensive collection consists of over 100 items - including moisturizers, cleansers, and treatments that promote clear skin and address anti-aging, acne, hydration, sun care and other daily skin needs.
