As I take to my perch in the front row of the men’s shows for Fall/Winter 2010 during New York Fashion Week, I thought it would make sense to talk to you, dear readers, about items which came down the runway a few months back (worn by some of the most recognizable male models working today) that you can actually buy right now (either online or at your local mall).
Last month, Banana Republic held their annual dinner for the fashion press at Indochine (my absolute favorite restaurant in New York City – and no, it’s not just because the walls are covered in the chicer-than-chic banana leaf wallpaper originally used by decorator Don Loper for the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1941) to celebrate their Summer 2010 collection. Above is a of picture yours truly with Michelle Hellman, Banana Republic’s Public Relations Manager, from that very night.
The evening’s host, Simon Kneen (Banana Republic’s Executive Vice President of Design & Creative Director) couldn’t stop talking about chinos—“we have totally reinvented our chinos. Never was there a better time to update these American Classics with a range of washes and fits—including a vintage slim fit that we know our customer is going to look cool and feel sexy in.”
Wanting to hear more (because anyone who follows this column and the monthly fashion editorials in Instinct already knows I’m a big fan of Banana Republic!), I asked Simon (the very next morning) what are the top five items every man should buy from Banana Republic this season—and his response was:
1. Chinos (naturally!)
2. Denim “updated washes and fits”
3. A soft-wash military style shirt “with patch-pockets and epaulettes”
4. The elephant logo polo shirt “the only logo to be wearing!”
5. A deconstructed blazer “in Madras or solid”
I also asked Simon to walk us through my three favorite runway looks from Banana Republic’s Spring/Summer 2010 show…
Look # 4 worn by Arthur Kulkov (from Request Model Management and seen in ads for Hermes, Tommy Hilfiger, Russell & Bromley and Sisley):
“This shows the blues of denim worn together in an effortless way. This look is cool again after being a fashion no-no since the late '70s. Total denim is a ‘yes!’ again!”
Look # 10 worn by Garrett Neff (from Click Model Management and seen in ads for Calvin Klein Underwear, Trussardi, Loewe and Barneys New York):
“Garrett looks great in really distressed denim matched back to a classic navy blazer. The shirt is layered with a tie-dye scarf. It’s ‘high and low’—the tailored hippy.”
Look # 35 worn by Ben Hill (from Wilhelmina New York and seen in ads for Louis Vuitton, Cesare Paciotti, H&M and Replay):
“Total safari. A rumpled sexy safari shirt in linen and silk worn back to the khaki five-pocket jean. The kerchief is a great Explorer’s touch”.
