With the U.S. Senate's immigration reform bill looming, Democratic New York Senator called a meeting with New York's leading elected gay officials and activists to discuss the inclusion of a pro-gay provision in the bill. 

The provision, which would protect binational same-sex couples from being separated by allowing foreign members to apply for green cards, has been presented as a make-or-break issue for the entire bill. 

Republicans have threatened to squash the bill if the provision is included.

Openly gay Pulitzer Prize winner Antonio Vargas' tear-jerking plea for protection for binational same-sex couples was met with applause on Capitol Hill today. 

The Uniting American Families Act—legislation that seeks to allow gay and lesbian Americans to sponsor their international partners for U.S. residency—was reintroduced into Congress on Tuesday. For the first time in the bill's history, the reintroduction included support from GOP lawmakers in the form of co-sponsors Reps. Richard Hanna (NY) and Charlie Dent (PA).

As scheduled, President Obama delivered his immigration reform speech today in Las Vegas and he did include changes that would protect same-sex families from being separated.

A coalition of more than 50 LGBT groups has sent a letter to President Obama, demanding that his administration hold off on splitting up binational same-sex couples until the Supreme Court releases its decision in Edie Windsor's case against the Defense of Marriage Act.

Leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus meeting today on Capitol Hill to discuss immigration reform emphasized the need for recognition of same-sex relationships in a comprehensive bill dealing with the matter. Details follow. 

House Democrats are applying necessary pressure to the Obama administration to ensure that binational same-sex couples are protected from deportation.

As it stands now, a foreign same-sex partner of a US citizen has virtually no protection regarding whether they're forced to leave the country based on immigration laws.
