Tags: buju banton, 2011 grammy awards, court, hate, reggae Buju Banton, the artist made internationally infamous for singing about the execution of gay men, was honored by the Recording Academy last night with a Grammy win for Best Reggae Album. But before you shake your gorgeous fists at the Grammy's for even considering to reward a man who made his name in music by inciting violence and murder, you might be pleased to learn that Mr. Banton's after-party consists of appearing in federal court in Miami today for a retrial of drug traficking and firearm charges. Charming. When did the Grammy's become as shifty as the Golden Globes?

We've devoted much virtual ink to unapologetic gaybasher Buju Banton and we refuse to stop until he clearly denounces his numerous calls for the murder of gay men. But Bayfront Park Amphitheatre in Miami doesn't seem to feel the same way, as it has booked Buju (granted special permission from a judge to perform the show as he awaits a February trial on drug charges) for a concert next month.
Worse yet, the flyer for the concert labels Buju's show a "Family Event," and encourages young children to be subjected to his anti-gay lyrics by allowing kids under 12 free entry.
Buju Banton Reminder #1:
This is the kind of music Miami-area kids are being encouraged to listen to:
Anytime Buju Banton come Batty bwoy get up an run At gunshot... FULL STORY

But, regardless of where you are, we have an inkling you may be watching the big awards show. We do realize the gays have a thing for music and the roster of gay, gay, gay perfomances (Gaga, Beyonce, Elton... FULL STORY

At least for one performance. After facing threats of boycotts and protests, the organizers of U.K.'s Wireless Festival, which Em is scheduled to headline next year, have asked the rapper to clean-up his anti-gay lyrics or find a new stage.
Much to the surprise of many, BET is reporting that Em said, "sure." Wireless Fest representatives now say that Eminem has agreed to censor himself during the performance so long as GLBT groups promise not to protest. OutRage!, a U.K. GLBT-rights group who has previously protested hate rappers like Beanie Man and, our personal favorite, Buju Banton, had previously objected to Em's appearance, but has since said they won't protest so long as he doesn't perform lyrics that inspire hate against the commu... One of our muses here at the Instinct Magazine blog, Buju Banton, has been arrested in Florida on federal drug charges. Banton, who has been in a federal prison in Miami since Thursday, was arrested with 5 kilograms of cocaine and charged with intent to sell. If convicted, the notorious "torture and kill the gays" Jamaican reggae artist faces up to 20 years in prison.
Update:
If you haven't yet heard, we--the gays--are responsible for Buju Banton's cocaine bust in Miami. That's right, Banton supporters are insisting the embattled homophobe is part of a larger conspiracy.
From the Miami Herald:
On Monday, in South Florida and Jamaica, callers burned up radio airwaves, calling the arrest a ``conspiracy'' to get him after ... FULL STORY

The Grammy nominations were announced yesterday, and while we were fawning over Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Our Lady of Gaga receiving nods, a pretty big slap in our faces slipped under the radar. Guess the Recording Academy merits homophobic “murder music” maestro Buju Banton worthy of a chance at the prestigious award, but perhaps they didn't think this possible PR nightmare through all the way.
Anyhow, Jim Key, Chief Public Affairs Officer of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center (LAGLC), issued the following response today:
“We’re shocked that Buju Banton, a singer with a long record of performing a song that glorifies the murder of gay people, would be honored with a Grammy nomination, regardless of the artistic merit... FULL STORY

UPDATE: Speaking as he oh-so-eloquently always does to Jamaican media, Banton the buffoon is back with more words of hate. The ragged reggae artiste known as Buju Banton, who met this week met with gay activists in San Francisco, says he will not "surrender" to the group's philanthropy proposals as they would contradict his religion and culture. Boo hoo hoo!
From the Jamaican Observer:
"This is a fight, and as I said in one of my songs 'there is no end to the war between me and faggot' and it's clear. The same night after I met with them [gay assocaites], they pepper-sprayed the concert. So what are you trying to tell me?" claimed Banton who phoned Mutabaruka's Cutting Edge (IRIE-FM) talk-show on Wednesday in order to clarify his meeting... FULL STORY

Yesterday, Buju Banton made a positive step forward in his controversial career by meeting with four leaders of the San Francisco GLBT community. The 40-minute meeting was the first between noted homophobe Banton and the GLBT, and seemed largely ornamental. After all, nothing distracts some of us like glitter, a Lady Gaga song or two and the appearance of allegiance (a certain leader of the free world's speech over the weekend comes to mind).
Michael Petralis, an activist in SF who met with Banton yesterday, recalls the event.
The meeting was very civil and productive, even though at times I had to play the "bad cop" activist, especially when Buju was dominating the discussion, and we made several suggestions for him to consider, in order... FULL STORY

Detroit's iconic Majestic Theatre has cancelled a concert by murder-music maven Buju Banton scheduled for tomorrow night.
Though they stand by their decision, owners of the venue admit that they'll lose roughly $10,000 from axing the show. In a sign of solidarity and good faith, local gay groups plan to stage a benefit in place of the Banton concert, featuring GLBT artists at the nearby Magic Stick Theatre. At $10 per entry, proceeds from the newly-scheduled concert will benefit the Majestic.
Replacing the negativity surrounding Banton's violent homophobic music with love and community support reads like a Hollywood happy ending (not the kind that costs $15 extra).
