President Obama's Department of Justice filed a memo in support of Edie Windsor's case against the "Defense of Marriage Act" on Friday, marking the second time the Administration has officially stated its opposition to the discriminatory law.

While we woke up with (or some of us night owls went to sleep with) good news that Judge Virginia A. Phillilps had denied the Department of Justice's request for a stay on her DADT ruling, as expected, Obama Admin. lawyers immediately appealed the turn of events to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

According to Poliglot, lawyers for the DOJ say:

We respectfully request that the Court enter an administrative stay by today October 20, 2010, pending this Court’s resolution of the government’s motion for a stay pending appeal, which would maintain the status quo that prevailed before the district court’s decision while the Court considers the government’s stay motion.

Last night the incomparable Rachel Maddow continued her cable news stewardship of the DADT issue by interviewing two active-duty soldiers on the topic. Follow the jump for the interviews.

On a related note, some breaking DADT news: Lawyer's from Obama's DOJ are expected to file on Thursday afternoon in Riverside, CA an injunction to request a stay of Judge Virginia Phillips's ordering of the Pentagon to immediately suspend DADT enforcement. Should the request for a stay be denied, Obama's lawyers will file an emergency request with the ninth circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.
