Tags: tennessee, d-bags, bigots, don't say gay, stacey campfield, homophobia, education, legislation Yet again, homophobic Tennessee State Senator Stacey Campfield (pictured) is attempting to shove his deep-seeded bigotry down the throats of all families in the state with a new "Don't Say Gay" bill. Along with Rep. Bill Dunn, Campfield has introduced legislation that would ban Tennessee schools from teaching young students about anything gay-related.
Reads the bill, known as House Bill 229 or Senate Bill 49: "No public elementary or middle school shall provide any instruction or material that discusses sexual orientation other than heterosexuality."
Though his proposed legislation includes explicit orders for Tennessee schools to take sides, it seems its author, Sen. Campfield, is as blind to reality as he wants the children in his state... FULL STORY

Is gender all in the head? Researchers in Spain seem to think so—at least when it comes to identifying "transsexuals." In a preview to a study set for release next month, New Scientist Magazine looks into the National University of Distance Education's work with brain scans and reports that an area of grey matter may actually hold the key to identifying transsexual people before puberty.
The key brain region involved is the BSTc. Doctors could potentially use this information to delay puberty to improve the success of a gender reassignment surgery later.
"In a study due to be published next month, the team ran MRI scans on the brains of 18 female-to-male transsexual people who'd had no treatment and compared them with those... FULL STORY

Tags: canada, montreal, sex, education, wtf A teacher in Montreal has been suspended for handing out a sexually-explicit test to her eighth grade class. Her multiple-choice exam included questions relating to anal sex, lesbianism, penis size, difference in sexual attributes among the races, and other fun x-ish-rated subjects! Parents who filed the complaints that earned the teacher a suspension say their children were asked "whether or not 'blacks have bigger penises' or if they agreed that 'all sexual positions are comfortable.'"
Astoundingly, experts are in disagreement over whether the exam was inappropriate for the age group, with one supporting the decision claiming that Montreal's recent banning of any type of sex-ed calls for more drastic measures such as this.

Updated Thursday, November 18, 12 p.m. EST
Bristol Palin sure makes a great GOP-in-waiting, apparent in her spin on lil sis Willow Smith's blatant homophobic bullying into quite the promotional opportunity!
Bristol, appearing on the Joy Behar Show, attempted a non-apology apology for Willow's behavior before plugging her Tea-Party-backed Dancing With The Stars ascension.
"Willow and I shouldn't have reacted to negative comments about our family. We apologize. On a nicer note, thank you for supporting the great competition in Dancing With The Stars!"
______________
While Bristol has her tolerable moments, another of Sarah Palin's yungins, Willow, has earned our ire after posting homophobic comments on the Facebook... FULL STORY

A Facebook page asking an Arkansas school district to fire an official has reached 17,000 supporters. Clint McCance, a school board member in Independence County, Arkansas, is under fire this week for a horrifically anti-gay Facebook statement he posted regarding last week's Spirit Day, reading, “Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers committed suicide. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed therselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE.” [sic, and from an education professional, keep in mind!]
In response to the dangerous homophobia the education board member spewed,... FULL STORY

The Washington Post has earned some humanizing cred (a rare feat for the publication) today after publishing an op-ed piece by Sirdeaner Walker, the mother of 11-year old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover. Carl took his life in 2009 after suffering for years at the hands of unyielding anti-gay bullies.
A snippet from Walker's piece, titled "Addressing anti-LGBT bullying: Something all Christians can support":
If schools perceive addressing anti-gay bullying as a controversial issue, then they'll continue the status quo of putting their heads in the sand and hoping the issue takes care of itself.
It won't. And we need to be clear on one thing - addressing anti-gay bullying is not a controversial issue. If you move through the smoke screen organizations... FULL STORY

Tags: california, education, los angeles, lacc, jonathan lopez, marriage equality The notoriously progressive 9th District Court has stopped Jonathan Lopez's lawsuit against Los Angeles Community College. Back in early 2009 we pointed you to the then-LACC student's pending free-speech suit against the school, a lawsuit Lopez brought forth after he was stopped by his professor mid-speech for speaking out against marriage equality. A lower court sided with Lopez's claim that LACC's sexual-harassment policy did not trump his right to free speech but today the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled otherwise.
For the technical meat of the argument, Judge Sandra S. Ikuta wrote in her opinion that Lopez "failed to make a clear showing that his intended speech on religious topics gave rise to a specific and credible threat ... FULL STORY

Today at the LGBT Center in New York City, Governor David Paterson signed the Dignity For All Students Act (DASA), a landmark anti-bullying bill that serves as the first piece of legislation in New York state to identify gender expression as a protected class.
The NGLTF's Rea Carey responds:
“For some young people, going to school is tantamount to a daily dose of torture. In too many cases, harassment, taunting and abuse are allowed to go on unabated in our nation’s schools. We have repeatedly seen the tragic consequences of this pervasive problem: young people are left emotionally damaged, physically hurt, or feel they have no other option than to take their own lives out of hopelessness and despair. Youth who are lesbian, gay,... FULL STORY
