Congressman Barney Frank took to the Joy Behar Show last night, and discussed, among other things, his recent criticisms of the National Equality March.
The NEM portion of the interview occurs around 4:00.
It's no secret that we have a thing for Jon Stewart and his Daily Show. Last night's episode proved no different as Stewart tackled the major cable news networks (especially Fox) and the lack of coverage given to the National Equality March.
Senator Harry Reid, the highest-elected Mormon in the US government, allegedly blasted his church's involvement in Prop 8 and the marriage equality movement, reports The Salt Lake Tribune.
During a meeting with organizers of the National Equality March, Reid reportedly brought up the Mormon connection to anti-equality. According to outreach director for the NEM, Derek Washington, Reid said that he found the Church's involvement to be a "waste of church resources and good will" and "didn't think it was appropriate."
Robin McGhee, who attended the meeting, expands on Reid's reported discontent with the LDS. "He personally said they needed to be focused on other things," she said. "He felt it was harmful for the church to focus on such a divisive...
Buzzfeed counts down the Top 20 witty signage found at the National Equality March. Though a few stand out, on a whole it's obvious we are a clever and sassy bunch.
Sorry, Congressman Frank, First Lady Gaga doesn't think Americans should stay home this weekend, and is imploring them to head to D.C. to take part in the National Equality March instead.
"On October 10 and 11 I will be in Washington, D.C. to lend my support to the National Equality March. This march is a call to action for all people from all over the country to gather to march to be visible as one and to speak out and demand full equal rights for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered citizens in all 50 states.
"If we see ourselves as free and equal people, then we need to act as free and equal people. Now is the time to act so get your ass to D.C. and lend your support. Lend your voice and demand to be heard. I hope to see you th...
Though we plan on having the latest National Equality March updates all weekend-long here on our blog as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages, the Human Rights Campaign has just announced that President Obama's speech coming up on Saturday evening will be broadcast live on CSPAN.
From the press release:
The network will begin coverage at approximately 7:55 p.m. eastern with introductory remarks by HRC President Joe Solmonese followed by President Obama. HRC will also make the speeches available online later in the evening via their blog at www.HRCBackStory.org.
Congressman Barney Frank appeared on Michelangelo Signorile's radio show yesterday and shocked many listeners with his comments on this weekend’s National Equality March. Labeling the march “useless” and calling for activists to “stay home,” Frank’s stark opinions have resonated throughout the larger GLBT community today.
From Signorile.com (where you can listen to a stream of the conversation):
Barney Frank believes the march this weekend and rally on the mall are "useless" and don't put pressure on the White House. "I literally don't understand how this will do anything," he said. "People are kidding themselves. I don't want people patting themselves on the back for doing something that is useless." Besides, he says, "Barack...
President Obama isn’t the only one making last-minute pledges to appear at this weekend’s National Equality March – Lady Gaga, arguably the commander in chief of the gays in the free-world, plans to attend as well. Unlike Obama, Gaga is ready to get her Saturn-rings or Kermit The Frog boots dirty during Sunday’s march itself.
Making the announcement at a benefit party after pulling Madonna’s hair in that awkward SNL skit on Saturday night, Gaga mixed up her gay marches by referring to the NEM as a gay pride event. It’s the support, not the semantics that matters, right?!
There will be a very high-powered superstar making a quick appearance on the eve of the National Equality March: President Obama. Scheduled to be only the second president to speak before the Human Rights Campaign (Clinton did it well in '97), President Obama has agreed to put his oratory skills to great gay use in the spirit of the NEM.
The speech, scheduled for the annual HRC dinner on Saturday night, will likely touch on the subjects many in the GLBT community have accused the president of avoiding, despite campaign pledges -- DADT, DOMA, ENDA. Lots of acronyms to be covered in what surely is a golden score for organizers of the already-historic weekend.
The HRC is expected to make an official announcement this afternoon.
