Britney Spears has tapped much in her life (hardy, har), but no tapping quite as ambitious as her just-announced plans to utilize her Facebook fanbase to release her new single, "Hold It Against Me." Instead of solidifying a release date for the song, Brit's record label will keep it under wraps until 2 million people ask for it on Facebook using a unique Britney widget that could be made available as early as Monday, January 10. My guess is that getting 2 million Facebook fans to spread the request around will only take a few hours at most, meaning we could be listening to new Britney in a matter of days! Stay tuned to Instinct online for more news and the Facebook widget as soon as it arrives.
In other Britney news, MTV asked thousands... FULL STORY

Tags: 2010, facebook, mark zuckerberg, time magazine, person of the year, internet Mark Zuckerberg!
Though it feels like Facebook permeated the cultural conversation years ago and nothing exceedingly new happened in 2010 with the world's largest social network (aside from some appearance tweaks and PR nightmares regarding personal data), Time Magazine has chosen founder Mark Zuckerberg as its person of the year.
The past few days of waiting for the announcement have been agony for folks who care about this sort of thing (which may or may not include me), as the race for the 2010 'Person of the Year' was expected to go to the Wikileaks mastermind, alleged criminal and jail-house recluse Julian Assange. Maybe next year Julian should petition Hollywood to produce a Golden Globe nominated feature film based around his story?... FULL STORY

To raise awarenes for its Gays and Lesbians Adorn the World campaign, the Serbian-based Gay And Lesbian Info Centre (GLIC) is hoping they do.
We all know that Betty White's return to the top can be accredited to a Facebook Page campaign. But the effect's of the latest social network awareness-raising trend -- changing one's profile picture to coincide with the cause of the day -- are ambiguous.
Still, the GLIC is asking that those in support of World Human Rights Day (more on it here) on Friday, December 10 add a picture of a well-known LGBT leader as their profile pic to call attention to the group's new campaign.
We did it to fight bullying, we did it to fight child abuse, and we'll surely keep changing our pictures. But ... FULL STORY

This time it's Bristol Palin, who took to Facebook to playfully rebut fellow-past-Dancing With The Stars co-star Margaret Cho. You might recall that our beloved Margaret recently said Sarah Palin "forced" Bristol to do the show, prompting Bristol's -- well Bristol's writer's -- response, which includes, like the last Facebook rebuttal from a Palin kid, kind of offensive gay stuff.
There are two things that boil my blood regarding this: Whoever is writing as Bristol these days needs to dumb their work down a bit. When the original WillowPalin/Facebook saga began, the REAL Bristol responded herself in an FB message that included enormous grammar, syntax and spelling errors common to an American kid of her age. Ever since then Bristol's... FULL STORY

Tags: sarah palin, willow, trig, bullying, internet, facebook For the first time since the Facebook incident, Sarah Palin discusses her 16-year old daughter Willow's anti-gay rant with Fox News' Sean Hannity (fast forward to the six minute mark for the excerpt). Like Bristol, Sarah glosses over the harmful use of the "bad word," "faggot," and instead calls out the media for putting the spotlight on the teen drama and exploits (erroneously and untruthfully, actually) her handicapable son Trig as the excuse for the homophobic bullying escapade. Pretty sick and twisted, if you ask me... FULL STORY

Updated Thursday, November 18, 12 p.m. EST
Bristol Palin sure makes a great GOP-in-waiting, apparent in her spin on lil sis Willow Smith's blatant homophobic bullying into quite the promotional opportunity!
Bristol, appearing on the Joy Behar Show, attempted a non-apology apology for Willow's behavior before plugging her Tea-Party-backed Dancing With The Stars ascension.
"Willow and I shouldn't have reacted to negative comments about our family. We apologize. On a nicer note, thank you for supporting the great competition in Dancing With The Stars!"
______________
While Bristol has her tolerable moments, another of Sarah Palin's yungins, Willow, has earned our ire after posting homophobic comments on the Facebook... FULL STORY

Tags: pepsi refresh project, point foundation, i'm from driftwood, community service, facebook The Pepsi Refresh Project has done some incredible work this year, donating massive amounts of money to some very worthy organizations chosen by the general public. And now we can help some of our favorites earn the chance for some much-needed cash.
The Point Foundation could receive $50,000—the equivalent of two, full Point Scholarships—in December 2010 via the Pepsi Refresh Project, which is giving away $1.3 million every month this year.
Voting began yesterday to see which new batch of groups will win the funds, and here’s how you can help Point: 1. Visit www.pepsirefresh.com 2. Once there, click Sign In in the lower-left corner. 3. Create a simple profile: —first & last name, e-mail address, password... FULL STORY

Tags: it gets better, gay youth, bullying, facebook, internet A coalition of GLBT Facebook employees got together to arrange a well-edited and touching video for the 'It Gets Better' project.
Whether you like Facebook or not, the tech company has been making great strides in anti-bullying recently, with today's video only the latest in the line of GLBT-support. Oh, and what does it say when the Facebook video -- up now for a few hours -- already has more views than President Obama's 'It Gets Better' contribution?

A Facebook page asking an Arkansas school district to fire an official has reached 17,000 supporters. Clint McCance, a school board member in Independence County, Arkansas, is under fire this week for a horrifically anti-gay Facebook statement he posted regarding last week's Spirit Day, reading, “Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers committed suicide. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed therselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE.” [sic, and from an education professional, keep in mind!]
In response to the dangerous homophobia the education board member spewed,... FULL STORY

Oakleigh Reed (nicknamed "Oak" by his peers) was rightfully elected Muskegon, Michigan's Mona Shores High School Homecoming King by the student body. But when it came time to receive his crown, the school principal denied Oak the honor because he enrolled at Mona Shores as a female, despite peers and teachers comfortable with identifying him as male. Regardless of the majority of the school's loving support, a runner-up was announced as homecoming king, a shady move that quickly sparked unrest in the school. Oak's classmates have not only created a Facebook page in moving support, but have also assigned Friday, October 1 as a day of action to show their love for the rightful homecoming king.
The kids are all right, folks.

Tim Ravndal, who was fired from the Montana Tea Party over a homophobic Facebook thread, has issued a press release to deny his involvement in the issue.
It has been reported by a variety of media sources about the face book exchange and the consequent removal of Tim Ravndal from the office of President of the Big Sky Tea Party Association.
It is important to recognize that the story that started on face book continued with a breaking story in the Great Falls Tribune. The Great Falls Tribune reporter John went forward with his story without all the details. Furthermore, John appeared only interested in the third party comments. Upon the inability to get the desired results, John went with... FULL STORY
