In sobering news (though it's Monday so practically everything is sobering news), the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program has announced that sexual orientation based crime is the second most frequent hate crime committed, second only to crimes based on race.

This is according to the 2011 Hate Crimes statistics.

Other than becoming a real life Homeland storyline, there wasn't much to interest run-of-the-treadmill gays in the hetero affair scandal that lead to David Petraeus's resignation.

Until talk of a shirtless photo from an FBI agent involved in the investigation entered the picture, that is.

Check out the shirtless photo of FBI Agent Fred Humphries that has the whole world talking after the jump!

The FBI, maybe because they are the FBI, believe that rumors of J. Edgar Hoover being gay are just that, rumors. But we are pretty sure of two things: 1) Hoover, being the director and founder of the FBI, would not have been found out if he didn't want to be found out and 2) where there is smoke there is fire. Details after the jump.

The upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic already has plenty going for it:

Leonardo DiCaprio stars, Clint Eastwood directs and Dustin Lance Black pens the script. Sounds good, right?

Well not to some in the FBI who believe the slightly unconfirmed image of Hoover as a gay man with a side-hobby as a cross-dresser is somehow insulting.

Terry Booth, a retired FBI agent, tells AOL News that he's upset about Hoover's portrayal as gay. "Obviously it upsets me when he's commonly portrayed wearing a dress or having an alleged relationship with Clyde Tolson. There are those who choose to believe it and those who choose not to. I think 99 percent of the agents don't believe it."

We may have had a feeling that things were bad, but little did we know that hate crimes against GLBT Americans increased by 11% in 2008, according to the FBI. The sobering statistic was only released today, but already the Human Rights Campaign has issued a response.

Said HRC President Joe Solmonese, These numbers are unacceptable. While it is so important that we have the new federal hate crimes law, it is critical to ensure that we continue working with the Department of Justice to ensure the safety of LGBT citizens.”

Solmonese went on to say, "We have to prosecute each hate crime to the fullest extent of the law, but we also need to get at the roots. When we don't know each other as human beings, ignorance breeds misunderstanding,...
