Massachusetts Senator John Kerry and Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley have joined forces in a new fight to end the ban on gay male blood donation in the United States.

This comes after Kerry's previous efforts to reverse the ban in 2010.

Gardasil, which is now widely used to prevent infection of certain forms of HPV (the virus that causes warts) and decrease woman's risk of cervical cancer, has been approved by the FDA to now help fight anal cancer in men. 

The National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) has applauded the FDA approval for the expected impact it will have on the health of men who have sex with men and those living with HIV as both groups experience anal cancer (which is usually rare) at disproportionately higher rates.

Senator John Kerry called on the FDA today to change its decades-old ban prohibiting gay men from donating blood. Calling the law discriminatory and pointing out that not a single piece of scientific evidence supports the ban, Kerry added, “A law that was once considered medically justified is today simply outdated and needs to end, just as last year we ended the travel ban against those with HIV."

Kerry also noted that the country’s three largest blood donation groups (including the American Red Cross) in the country support the change in policy.
