In response to the Monday release of the National Organization for Marriage's 2010 financial records, the Human Rights Campaign hits hopefully the final nail in NOM's coffin directly on the head: with only five big donors, how can NOM call itself a "grassroots organization"?

The next time you're asked why marriage equality is important to you, simply say "$9,960." Number crunchers have averaged out how much costlier a union is for a gay couple compared with heterosexuals to arrive at that figure.

"Gay couples have to go to an attorney, have a will drawn up, get durable powers of attorney. Not only is it a financial expense, but many of those things can be challenged by people's biological families," said Rick Garcia, political director for the gay and lesbian rights group Equality Illinois. "A heterosexual couple that barely knows each other can walk into the county clerk's office, get a license, get married by an administrative law judge, and all their rights and all their protections...
