Around New Year's Eve they predicted 2,500 registered athletes, but organizers of the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne say that 5,000 contenders have now already registered. The explosion of athletes (sounds like a dream I had last night) come from 49 different countries, with USA and host nation Germany counting the most. And in case you are wondering, the current most popular sports for registrants are swimming, soccer/football and volleyball.

“With 5,000 registered participants, we are far ahead of our forecast of 2,500 for New Years Eve,” said the Co-President of Games Cologne, Annette Wachter. “Taking the credit crunch into consideration, this is a fantastic result and we are looking positively ahead to this coming July and August."

As we wait to see if Chicago will host the 2016 Olympics (announced on Friday), another Midwestern city is celebrating its scoring of an Olympic-sized sporting event. After a year of vying to host the 2014 Gay Games against competition such as D.C. and Boston, it was announced that Cleveland, Ohio has won the event.

"The City of Cleveland is prepared to roll out the welcome mat to the GLBT athletes, their families and spectators from around the world," remarked Mayor Frank G. Jackson.  "Fans of the Gay Games will find that Cleveland is a great place to celebrate sports and culture and that we have tremendous assets and amenities for them to enjoy.  The sports and cultural environment here is truly a uniquely Cleveland experience, ...

Competition during the Gay Games isn't limited to the track or swimming lanes; there are also a handful of cities that go head to head in hopes of hosting the event. While only one city earns the gay gold and gets to call the games their own, next year, during Cologne’s run in 2010, the Gay Games will honor the each and every city that has placed a bid in the past. The 18 global cities have been invited to send representatives to next year’s Opening Ceremony to receive Medals of Honor, possibly to jumpstart a flurry of bids for the year 2018. After receiving five bids in 2002, the amount of hopeful hosts fell to three for the most recent nominations. The host city for the 2014 event (Boston, Cleveland or Washington, D.C.) will be announced...
