Distressing pictures of the bloody and swollen face of Joseph Baken of Missoula, Montana swirled the Internet over the weekend and early part of the week. Baken, 22, told police on Sunday that he was the victim of an anti-gay hate crime, going so far as identifying his attackers.

But now Baken has admitted that he made the whole thing up.

Another terrifying attack from over the weekend in the Midwest has come to our attention. As with police involved in the Lincoln nightmare, despite obvious evidence, Oklahoma City law enforcement officials are not yet calling the firebombing of a gay man's car that had been spray painted with "fag" a hate crime. A lawyer defending three lesbians in a case of an assault against a gay man is asserting that LGBT cannot and do not commit "hate crimes" against one another. Is he right? Details follow.
