In April we reported on Kristopher Sharp, the University of Houston-Downtown junior who was running to become vice president of the university's student body.
In a move that would have made Tracy Flick cringe in Election, someone that opposed Sharp's candidacy posted flyers announcing Kristopher's HIV-positive status with the question "Want AIDS?" blaring across the top. Kristopher was also accused of attempting to spread the "homosexual agenda."
Well apparently the students at UH-Downtown aren't easily influenced by fear-mongering and bigotry, because Kristopher won the election!
He speaks with POZ Magazine about the experience after the jump!

One of the standout reasons Here Comes Honey Boo Boo was celebrated by gay audiences in 2012 is the show's inclusion of the star child's uncle, Lee Thompson. Known better as Uncle Poodle, he helped Honey Boo Boo become a gay ally at a very young age with sound bytes ready to compete with the best of 'em. (Remember "everybody's a little gay"?).
Now, Uncle Poodle might be inspiring southern tolerance in new ways after also coming out as HIV positive.

This past August the U.S. Department of the Navy quietly updated its policy, which now allows HIV-positive Sailors and Marines to take overseas assignments and serve on select large ship platforms.
The move was so quiet, in fact, that it's just become known to the public.
Prior to the policy change, HIV-positive servicemembers were forbidden from stepping foot on foreign soil, including during peace time and in non-combat zones.

Updated Friday 4:25 p.m. PST
As expected, people were fired up about this story that broke Thursday. And in trend with the times, a massive Change.org petition was launched overnight calling on Milton Hershey School officials to reverse their decision and admit an HIV-Positive student to the school.
"Schools should be allies, not enemies of students living with HIV,” said Lawrence Stallworth II, now age 20, who is leading the campaign on Change.org with Advocates for Youth.
“It shouldn’t be the responsibility of a 13-year-old boy to teach the Milton Hershey School about the science of HIV or the moral obligation educators have to meet the needs of all students. But this young man is doing just that – and we all have a responsibility... FULL STORY
