Tags: ol orange one, john boehner, doma, obama, house of representatives, hrc, aclu, republicans Expected but disturbing news is breaking across the worldwide web and coming from news outlets across the nation right now. The weepy ol' Orange One, or Speaker of the House, John Boehner is going forward with our taxpaying dollars to defend DOMA in court since the Obama administration announced the president found that a key section of DOMA was unconstitutional, and was no longer going to have his administration defend the discriminatory law.
Now there are questions that come to light and HRC has shared some of their concerns (via their press release):
1. There are at least nine federal lawsuits -- spanning three appellate courts and four district courts in six states -- challenging the constitutionality of Section... FULL STORY

Considering the 111th Congress passed DADT repeal before the end of its session, an update of sorts was due to the go-to scorecard for the LGBT community, issued regularly by the Human Rights Campaign. For its updated ranking of the 111th Congress, HRC gave 161 members a score above 90%, up from 128 members in the pervious body.
From a press release:
The 111th Congress will certainly go down in the history books as one of the most productive for the LGBT community,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “However much work remains to be done and new anti-LGBT congressional leaders create a much more challenging environment to achieve the kind of landmark progress we’ve seen.”
In the House, 161 members scored 90 percent or above,... FULL STORY

In a move that makes the Human Rights Campaign's acquisition of Harvey Milk's iconic Castro camera shop more palatable, the Trevor Project has announced a partnership that will take place in the building. The organization's esteemed Lifeline -- a crisis and suicide-prevention call center for struggling LGBTQ teens -- will now boast workspace alongside HRC in the historic building. In addition to the cohabitation, HRC has pledged a $10,000 annual donation for every year of the partnership.
Feel better about HRC's decision to move into Milk's old campaign headquarters?

As new members of Congress are sworn in today the Human Rights Campaign gauges the shift in the LGBT attitude of both chambers. The outcome isn't pretty.
"A Human Rights Campaign analysis shows a pick-up of 53 House seats to anti-LGBT lawmakers as well as a 5 seat addition in the Senate. Not only do those opposing basic equality hold positions of power as House leaders and committee chairmen, their ranks have swollen to 225 – a solid majority of the chamber. This presents not just a roadblock to progress but also the threat of legislation that could be damaging to the community."
However frightful the org's forecast might be, it certainly is a nifty way to fundraise, don't you think?

The latest in line of the celebrity-studded New Yorkers for Marriage Equality videos is Broadway star Daphne Rubin-Vega. While Daphne is already the eighth celebrity to speak out for marriage equality in the Empire STate, she's the first to create a video in Spanish for the campaign.
Says HRC prez Joe Solmonese:
“With pro-equality gains in the legislature and a Governor-elect ready to sign a marriage bill into law, New York can be on the leading edge of fairness for all families,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “We’re particularly excited to highlight a high-profile, Spanish-speaking New Yorker who will spur fair-minded citizens to make their voices heard on this critical equality issue. Everyone needs to be... FULL STORY

Perhaps the HRC was a bit too quick to "recognize" the Mormon Church's alteration of its handbook. When HRC lauded the removal of same-sex attraction as a sin and the Church's call for therapy of homosexuals, Mormons got their magic underpants in knots and felt the urge to make it clear that they're no friends of HRC or the GLBT community.
"The HRC's representations of the changes in the new handbook are simply absurd," said Scott Trotter, a spokesman for the LDS.
The LDS goes on to remind us that while they've updated official Church policy, they've simply moved the requirement to put gay Mormons into therapy to another section. And while the Mormon handbook no longer says we should repent for the way God made us, it does place being gay... FULL STORY

Did you think Scripture dictated what constitutes a sin? Nope! Deciding what is or isn't a sin is as easy as the swipe of a pen, as evident in the Mormon Church's decision to remove same-sex attraction as a sin from official Church policy. The Mormon move, which came on Saturday, also revokes its requirement that followers seek counseling when they come forward with the gay urge.
The HRC was quick to recognize the progress but made it clear the Mormon Church is still not exactly a beacon of equality.
From a HRC press release:
“The new guidelines clearly show that advocacy efforts pay off with real change,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “We spoke out against the harms of so-called ‘reparative therapies’ on LGBT young people... FULL STORY

Wal-Mart is already on the wrong side of the community's gaydar. And with far more publicized outrage of the anti-gay motives of competitors like Target and Best Buy, it's in ugly company and might think it might be able to avoid our scorn. But a new move to carry a book promoting the massively-disproven (and harmful) "ex-gay" brainwashing places its gay-unfriendliness under our Mary microscopes: at least 100 of the retail behemoth's locations now stock Janice Barret Graham's title Chased By An Elephant: The Gospel Truth About Today's Stampeding Sexuality.
No, "Chased By An Elephant" is not a cheeky referral to the average Wal-Mart shopper's girth, but instead is a parable for a handbook that beguiles little ones into internalized self-hatred... FULL STORY

Tags: religion, faith, mormon church, boyd packer, minnesota, hrc, gay youth, video, bigots It has spread rumors of image rehabilitation in step with the growing tolerance of the American people, but don't mistake it: the Mormon Church continues its ardent anti-gay diatribe. Over the weekend, Boyd K. Packer, president of the Mormon Church's Quorom of Twelve Apostles, became possessed with the Holy Spirit™ and spewed bucket-loads of dangerous (and very anti-Christian) homophobic vitriol.
In light of the recent tragedies, the Human Rights Campaign was quick to lash out against Packer.
“Words have consequences, particularly when they come from a faith leader. This is exactly the kind of statement that can lead some kids to bully and others to commit suicide,” said Joe Solmonese, president of HRC. “When a faith... FULL STORY
