Alan Gordon, a forward for Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, has received his punishment after hurling a homophobic slur towards Portland Timbers midfielder Will Johnson.

The Anti-Defamation League knows the exact chords to tug on the few heart strings we have to make us reach for the tissue box, apparently. In the group's new ad, it imagines what LGBT heroes who were taken from us before their time (such as Harvey Milk and Matthew Shepard) would be up to today. Grab the Kleenex and follow the jump.

That is, at least according to Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights President William A. Donohue. 

What's got him screaming that the sky is falling? The rescue of the "gay" dog that was sent to a shelter to die last week after his owner decided the dog was of the homosexual persuasion.

Is Major League Soccer leading the charge in holding professional athletes accountable for homophobic behavior?

The blog Grantland makes the case that the league's swift responses and punishments levied against players that use homophobic slurs sets it apart form other professional sports  leagues.

They also have a theory as to why MLS is so adamant about presenting a pro-gay tone.

Not even allowing the citizens of Maine who find themselves on the right side of history a weekend to celebrate, the Christian Civic League has already started making plans to bring marriage equality back before voters in yet another referendum. 

The NBA has aggressively paved the way for America's first openly gay pro sports star by becoming the only league so far to participate in GLAAD and Athlete Ally's LGBT training program. 

Major League Soccer (MLS) has ended its partnership with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and it may or may not be based on the BSA's reaffirmed stance opposing homosexuality.

National Hockey League players continue to take a pro-gay stance in their ongoing You Can Play campaign.

Ten new NHL players have joined the PSA project passing along the message that "If you can play, you can play."

If we threatened to extort every supposedly straight guy that we had a “relationship” with in high school and college…well presumably we’d be in jail. Serving multiple sentences.

That threat apparently didn’t phase Christian Bedard, the former high school classmate of Major League Baseball player, Carl Pavano, the pitcher (heh.) for the Minnesota Twins.

Bedard alleges that he and Pavano had a 3-year sexual relationship in high school and apparently used Facebook as his means to get the professional ball player (handler?) to pay up in exchange for his silence.

Major League Soccer has handed down a punishment for Colin Clark, the Houston Dynamo embroiled in controversy after calling a young ball boy "faggot."

So, what's the punishment?
