Around New Year's Eve they predicted 2,500 registered athletes, but organizers of the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne say that 5,000 contenders have now already registered. The explosion of athletes (sounds like a dream I had last night) come from 49 different countries, with USA and host nation Germany counting the most. And in case you are wondering, the current most popular sports for registrants are swimming, soccer/football and volleyball.

“With 5,000 registered participants, we are far ahead of our forecast of 2,500 for New Years Eve,” said the Co-President of Games Cologne, Annette Wachter. “Taking the credit crunch into consideration, this is a fantastic result and we are looking positively ahead to this coming July and August."
