The United States military has not erupted into a non-stop gay Bacchanalian orgy since repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," despite some early concerns from anti-gay officials. A new report from the Palm Center, the first scholarly effort to study the post-DAD military, paints quite the different picture, in fact.

If conservatives still have concerns regarding unit cohesion and troop morale now that the U.S. military is allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to openly serve, perhaps they'll rest a little easier with the publication of this recent study. (Something tells us even facts will have little impact.)

A study of the Israel Defense Force (IDF), which has allowed gay and lesbian servicemembers to serve openly since 1993, reveals that that the presence of gay soldiers does not undermine unit cohesion.

More after the jump.

Fair and balanced? Not if it's an ad conveying support for repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

While a majority of Americans (and even a majority of GOP) support ending DADT, Fox News has rejected an ad spot promoting just that.

“I am surprised that Fox News would reject an ad featuring allied Generals, given that both host Bill O'Reilly and guest contributor Liz Cheney have expressed support for open gay service," said Aaron Belkin, Palm Center Director. "This is an important time for input from all sides on this issue, and I hope Fox will reconsider.”

It's found its way into as many gay headlines today as Craigery Morgan, but Palm Center's new "Enormous Consequences" website is too witty to ignore. Launched after Def. Secretary Robert Gates blasted repeal of DADT because of the "enormous consequences" that would result, the new website shows just how many of these consequences have occurred since Judge Virginia Phillips froze Don't Ask, Don't Tell: zero.

Remarks made yesterday during a Pentagon briefing by Marine Corps Commandant General James Conway signal that the final hurdle in repealing DADT might be near, according to the Palm Center.

A press release from the Center states:

Commandant Conway stated that "if the law changes, we pride our Corps in leading the services in many, many things, and we're going to have to lead in this too." Palm Center Director Aaron Belkin stated, “Commandant Conway’s words are powerful. He has not been supportive of this change but he has now made clear that once the law is changed, the Marine Corps will set the pace for implementation of open service without delay.” The General’s comments come as the Senate prepares for consideration of repeal ...

Professor Diane H. Mazur, Legal Co-Director of the Palm Center, has published a report showing that in order to discharge soldiers under Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the military must prove soldiers are undermining their unit's readiness. The findings apply only to soldiers in the 9th Circuit, however.

From a press release:

If the Pentagon discharges Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach without showing that he undermined his unit’s readiness, this would violate the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals 2008 decision in Witt v. Department of the Air Force, according to a new report. The Witt decision holds that gay and lesbian service members cannot be discharged on the basis of the claim that homosexuality generally is detrimental to unit effectiveness. Rather,...
