Talk about changing the definition of something so traditional! Guess you can declare anything a "victory" when you're not so concerned with meanings and truthiness and all that. Maggie Gallagher, the unforgiving face of the National Organization for Marriage, has declared her group's embarrassing attempt to boycott Starbucks a victory.

Coffee humor!
Finding the coffee giant's support of the LGBT community too bitter to swallow, NOM's subsequent boycott of Starbucks has backfired and exploded tenfold in a wave of support for its target. The details (with 80 percent less coffee comedy, promise), after the jump!

Tags: ed watson, marriage equality, heroes, california, petitions, call to action, courage campaign There is renewed vigor in the fight against Prop. 8 this week, but nothing makes the call for the immediate return of full equality in California quite like Ed Watson's plea to Courage Campagin. Watch the video, read his letter, then head to Courage Campaign's website to sign a petition asking the Ninth Circuit Court to lift the stay.
Dear Courage Campaigner,
Yesterday I found out the California Supreme Court denied a motion to speed up the Prop 8 trial. They're going to take their summer recess and come back in around 6 months or so. It must be nice for them.
Thing is, I am 78 years old, and I have Alzheimer's disease. I have been with my partner, Derence, for over 40 years. And if the courts drag this out for months and months, I fear... FULL STORY

In response to Speaker John Boehner's immediate, terse criticism of the Obama Administration's DOMA move, Get Equal has issued a national petition asking the Speaker of the House to focus on job creation, rather than discrimination.
Reads Get Equal's petition:
Yesterday, Attorney General Eric Holder told Speaker of the House John Boehner that the Department of Justice would no longer defend the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court cases, maintaining that the 1996 legislation is unconstitutional.
Now it is up to Speaker Boehner, and members of the House, to decide whether to spend taxpayer resources to defend DOMA or focus on the real issues plaguing our country such as foreclosures, health care, unemployment,... FULL STORY

Updated Friday, January 21 10:30 a.m. EST
An interim superintendent from Valley Stream South High's school district has approved the gay-straight-alliance-like club proposed by students.
From the Long Island Herald:
South High School seniors Joseph Kofler and Kelly Egan had written a letter to Marsh, along with assistant superintendents Dr. Thomas Troisi and Dr. Bill Heidenreich and Board of Education Presidents Ken Cummings saying that Principal Maureen Henry had denied allowing them to start the club. Marsh said he investigated the situation and met with Henry, and the two agreed to start the club this week.
“I believe in this, and so does the principal,” he said, adding that there was no need to wait any longer.
The report... FULL STORY

GLAAD isn't so happy about the olive branch extended by KXXT-AM and CFNY-FM to the Westboro Clan, and wants you to sign a petition asking them to not give the deranged a bullhorn. Here's the petition.
This week Westboro has reacted to the tragedy in Tucson with messages like "God Sent the Shooter." Giving airtime to this malicious group is like negotiating with terrorists. Except in this case, Westboro is being incentivized by being provided with an outlet to broadcast their hate to thousands of others. While countless radio stations and media outlets around the country are properly paying tribute to the fallen and taking a serious look at the tragedy in Tucson, KXXT-AM and CFNY-FM have decided to renege on their responsibility as broadcasters... They took the fight to keep their names shielded from the public, but today those who signed the anti-gay Referendum 71 in Washington State learned from the Supreme Court that the Constitution does not allow homophobes to keep their attempts to steal human rights away from GLBT Americans secret. Today the nation's highest bench has ruled that the signatures on R71 has every Constitutional right in the American democracy to be made public.
Reports the AP on the precedent-setting decision:
Petition signers wanted to hide their names because of worries of intimidation. But the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco refused to keep their names secret. The Supreme Court stepped in and temporarily blocked release of the names until... FULL STORY

Who doesn’t want a little something sitting above their lips the entire month of Homovember? We do! Unfortunately (and fortunately), the only thing we’re talking about spreading is charity. Welcome readers, to Movember – a month of moustache growing, manly competition, and altruism – all to raise money for prostate cancer research and support.
To jumpstart festivities, Dermalogica in Santa Monica is hosting a kick-off party featuring free moustache rides, door prizes, raffles, grooming sessions and more (well, perhaps not free moustache rides; we tend to be wishful thinkers.)
When Movember wraps up, larger cities around the world will gather mustachioed men together to judge the length and vitality of their cultivations. Sounds ... FULL STORY
