Distressing pictures of the bloody and swollen face of Joseph Baken of Missoula, Montana swirled the Internet over the weekend and early part of the week. Baken, 22, told police on Sunday that he was the victim of an anti-gay hate crime, going so far as identifying his attackers.

But now Baken has admitted that he made the whole thing up.

Ugandan police interrupted a human rights training session on Monday, claiming that it was an illegal assembly. Advocates say the workshop was legal, but that they were targeted because they were training gay rights activists.

According to reports, the D.C. office of the Human Rights Campaign and the office for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force were evacuated after police passed along credible bomb threats. 

Staff have since returned to the HRC office following the "all clear" from D.C. police, but the story concerning the NGLTF is still developing.
