San Francisco's Castro neighborhood has been a gay haven for decades, with no denying the part of town you're in thanks to the rainbow flags found up and down Market and side streets along lamp posts. But now the gayest neighborhood in the country may have to yank down its color.
A neighborhood association says the flags were illegally hung on the metal lamp posts. City law only allows temporary banners on the posts, which were made city landmarks in '91, out of concern that the lamp post could be damaged. "We completely support the diversity in the area," the Mission Delores Association said in a statement to The Associated Press. "This is about preserving a city landmark from permanent signage."
