Sam Arora, a Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates, caused a huge uproar and received national media attention when he voted againt marriage equality in the state.  His "nay" vote followed his progressive election campaign in which he told constituents he was in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage AND after he co-sponsored the original marriage equality bill. 

Interestingly, Arora remained silent on why he completely turned against the constituency that elected him. (He also turned his back on key Democratic figures, former President Bill Clinton and Maryland Gov. Michael O'Malley, both of whom sought Arora's marriage equality support.)

Democratic Maryland House Rep. Sam Arora earned himself a permanent place on our shit list when he voted against marriage equality in Maryland—a vote that thankfully didn’t derail Maryland from joining the hallowed ranks of those states that allow same-sex marriage.

Arora has been pretty quiet regarding the reasoning behind his vote, which many viewed as a betrayal considering he ran for office on a pro-marriage equality platform and originally co-sponsored a bill in support of it.

He’s beginning to open up about what led to his vote.

The “Civil Marriage Protection Act” will be debated on the floor of the Maryland House of Delegates on Thursday after supporters decided to delay debate earlier today, presumably to secure more votes.
