It's convention fever! With the Republican National Convention convening this week in Tampa, attention is also turning to the Democratic National Convention, which will be hosted in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sept. 4-6.
Using North Carolina as the site of the DNC has caused some uproar in the wake of North Carolina's passage of Amendment 1, which banned gay marriage and civil unions in the state earlier this year.
Still, some are arguing that hosting the DNC in North Carolina will highlight the problems faced by the LGBT-community.

An amendment, proposed by Republican House Rep. Steve King (Iowa), that would ban same-sex marriage on military bases and prohibit military chaplains from performing same-sex marriage ceremonies passed with a vote of 247-166.

Two county clerks in Illinois have been given the green-light to defend Illinois' same-sex marriage ban against a lawsuit filed in the state's Cook County by 25 same-sex couples.
Cook County State's Attorny Anita Alvarez and Attorney General Lisa Madigan have refused to defend the same-sex marriage ban, citing their belief that it is in violation of the Illinois constitution. (This is similar to the Obama administration refusing to defend DOMA, based on their belief that it violate the US constitution.)

Mary Jamis, a lesbian from Mocksville, North Carolina, was arrested with her heterosexual friend, Mary Lea Bradford of Winston-Salem.
Jamis requested a North Carolina marriage license for her and her partner, Starr Johnson. Her request was rejected based on North Carolina's state law banning same-sex marriage.

President Obama has been notoriously quiet on his “evolving” stance towards the issue of same-sex marriage. While he’s consistently provided more rights to LGBT citizens, he’s seemed hesitant to fully commit to what appears to be inevitable: marriage equality for all.
Well, he appears to be dipping his toes into the water. Friday, the President publicly opposed the the North Carolina ballot initiative that would enact a state constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between one man and one woman and deny same-sex couples the right to civil unions.
