So the New York Times put on its visor and did our community's taxes only to arrive at really, really bad news for us gays -- being queer is damn expensive!
Compared to heterosexual American couples, the average gay couple spends (in a worst-case scenario) $467,562 more over the course its lifetime. The unprecedented study took into account legal fees (for all those power of attorney and guardian filings we have to endure that our straight friends don’t), health insurance (to account for those many companies that don’t recognize same-sex partners), child rearing costs (which are disproportionately higher for same-sex couples), federal taxing bullshit (which we get screwed on thanks to DOMA), and more.
