The New York Times Magazine has a huge story this week on a phenomenon that I've certainly noticed myself from my time in gay media: trans people—epspecially trans boys—are all over the place these days, and coming out and undergoing hormone treatments at a relatively young age.
(The picture here is of the band Le Tigre, which includes JD Samson, probably one of the most recognized genderqueer women in pop music today.)
The story opens with a transman, Rey, who entered Barnard (a women's college) as biologically female:
When I asked him why he wanted to start hormone therapy so soon, he
replied simply, “You live your life and you feel like a boy.” Of
course, living life like a boy is not what an elite women’s college has
historically been about.
Quite interesting. And given the trans community's long record of invisibility, the fact that this story is in the New York Times is pretty incredible. What do you think?
