Do Gay Guys Act Their Age? PDF  | Print |  EMail

My friends and I are heading off to the mountains this weekend.

Most of them will hit the slopes for some late-season skiing and snowboarding. Not me. I am going to sit in the hot tub by the fire with a toasty cup of spiced/spiked cider and rest my aged bones.

Two years ago, I broke my foot while snowboarding.

This is so NOT me!

My doctor asked me: “Aren’t you a little old to be snowboarding?”

More a declaration than a question, for sure, but it made me think. “Am I too old to be snowboarding?”

I didn’t think so. I was just doing it because it was fun. But it opens a bigger can of worms: What about backwards baseball caps? Facials? An obsession with the gym?

Are gay men just trying to be younger than we are?

What do you think?

I’ll ponder it while soaking in the hot tub.

I think it's really a mental thing. There's a line in an old song that goes "keep young and beautiful if you want to be loved."

There's that in-grained narcissism and vanity that all gay men face. If you're not chiseled or tall or skinny (or young for that matter) you're viewed as undesirable. There are many psychological factors that go into the behavior of trying to defy father time but I won't go into those.

In regards to doing things that are considered activities for "young" people I don't buy into it. Who cares what age you are if you want to go snow boarding or skiing? If you enjoy it and it promotes health and wellness in any aspect then nobody should say "you're too old" to do it! That's just plain B***S**T.

You need a new doctor! Just because you went snowboarding doesn't mean anything. I have no idea how old you are, Mike, I'm guessing early 30s, but you could be 60 and snowboard! Screw that doctor. And enjoy the hot tub!

I kind of disagree with the posters above. I totally get the whole mental thing, but at some point your bones get weak no matter what your mind wants to think...better safe than sorry.

If your doctor said that, especially if he said it that way, he behaved badly. No doctor should be so presumptuous and rude to a patient, no matter what the patient's age is or how concerned the doctor may be about the patient's welfare. As for the gays obsessed w/youth topic, some of us care about that stuff & some of us don't. It's just another of the issues where gays are just like everyone else.

I know this is sort of old, but either way I find it Interesting. i dont think that gay men are the ones that act "younger" then thier age. Is men no matter the orientation. I´m 22 I dont know if I qualify as "old" but when I get together with a only MALES group it always turns to be childish.. alot of playing, jumping and just being happy, and I have to say that almost all my male friends are straight.. is just about that, being fun. Women are like that also but a lil´more reserve sometimes (i blieve it has to be with the whole iucky period thing) but eiher way... act how ever u want to no matter the age.. be you, be fun, be what ever you wanna be.
