The US government can't seem to get its act together to pass a gay/lesbian non-discrimination bill (never mind that gay lawmakers have already written out transgender protections), and now we have the Cuban government considering an LGBT rights bill that would "pave the way" for nationally-recognized civil unions. What's more, trans protections are included. According to a Mexican media outlet, which quotes Mariela Castro, Fidel's neice:
If passed, the law will give lesbians, gays, transsexuals,
transvestites and transgender persons the same rights as heterosexuals
in Cuba
paving the way for unions between same-sex couples, as well as access
to sex reassignment treatment and hormone therapy for transsexuals,
which would allow them to change their gender legally.
The media said citing Mariela Castro, the director of the governmental
National Centre for Sex Education (CENESEX): "a relevant resolution
will be signed in the nearest future by the Ministry of Health, which
will determine the procedure for such surgery."
Please, please, can we have a progressive president, whomever it ends up being?

Not so fast guys, I'm a Cuban/American and the truth is far from the superficial proposal from the Cuban government regarding civil rights for the LGTTT community. Never mind the looks of civil rights for the LGTTT
Cuban community, this is all publicity trying to get to our gay American wallet and our love for Mojitos. The Cubans that I know, heterosexual or not, don't have any rights and are on a 24/7 watch by the communist regime.
Love you guys,
