With Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain dominating political news lately, reports of Senetor Edward "Ted" Kennedy's seizure on Saturday came out of the blue. Sadly, today his doctors have confirmed the diagnosis that the senior Massachusetts Congressman has a malignant brain tumor.
The Associated Press notes that the usual course of treatment includes combinations of radiation
and chemotherapy, although Kennedy's treatment will be decided after
more tests.
Malignant gliomas, which Kennedy has been diagnosed with, are a type of brain cancer diagnosed in about
9,000 Americans a year, usually among adults.
How well patients fare depends on what
specific tumor type is determined by further testing.
Democrat Ted Kennedy is currently the second-longest serving member of the Senate, having taken office in 1962 while his older brother John was President of the United States. Both his brothers John and Robert were assassinated during the 1960s.
Kennedy has publicly supported gay marriage and expanding hate crimes legislature to include sexual orientation, and his home state was the first to legalize same-sex marriage. The Boston Herald notes that President Bush called the Senator's wife, Victoria, after Kennedy's initial collapse, asking her to "take care of my friend."

This is so depressing. This man was always there for us. He's definitely going to be in my thoughts and prayers.
