We’re just days away from the start of fall TV, and while you’re busy clearing off old episodes of So You Think You Can Dance from your DVRs (no? Just us?), we took the time to comb through all the pitches, trailers and teasers for the new crop of shows to sift out the good from the bad. So, here are our picks for the new ideas and returning faves that we think you should be tuning in to.

Newbies:

Chase

While last TV season may have been all about the medical dramas (Mercy, Trauma), this season is apparently all about the law. Chase got our attention not only because it means NBC is going straight procedural with this U.S. Marshall crime show, but having Jerry Bruckheimer’s trademark action should mean more exciting TV...

We’d be fibbing if we said we weren’t proud of what the gorgeous Mark Hewlett went on to accomplish after making us drool on the cover of our April 2001 issue. Whether it was the addition of his Adonis-like body on the cover of subsequent national magazines like Men’s Health or his butch takeover and eventual championship of Fear Factor, we like to think we discovered the Zimbabwe-born model/actor/activist. We were lucky enough to get Mark on the phone while he was still in his wetsuit after a morning of catching waves in Laguna (you’re welcome for that image), and found out what he’s been up to since receiving the Instinct stamp of gaypproval over ten years ago.

Tim Gunn has been giving the tough love to would-be designers on Project Runway for years. But now he’s getting real with the rest of us in his new book, Gunn’s Golden Rules. Our favorite mentor isn’t just dispencing life advice in the book, though. We caught up with Tim in our new September issue to talk about writing, gossiping and more—and more is exactly what we have! Check out these exclusive excerpts from our chat with Tim.

I know when you did Instinct’s Soapbox last year…

Which I loved, by the way! I love that!

Oh, good! As did we. And I remember you said in that that if anyone ever saw you as a gay role model, that’s the best compliment you could ever get.

Absolutely! I have to tell you, it’s thrilled me and I ...

In the new September issue of Instinct Magazine, we introduce you to a very special mom making a difference in more than just her son’s life. Deborah Hawkins isn’t just defending her son, David, in the conservative South, but she’s taken her love and compassion and is trying to help parents everywhere via her website, isyourchildgay.com. It’s there that Deborah fields hundreds of e-mails from parents in various stages of learning about and coming to terms with their child’s sexuality.

In this special extension of September’s “Mom of the Month” column, Deborah explains in her own words how her activism came to be and how it feels to be a voice of reason for hundreds of moms and dads.

I live in a little town in South...

QuickGym ROM Machine
Price: $14,615
Website: www.quickgym.com

Description: The QuickGym ROM (range of motion) Machine is a unique looking piece
of exercise equipment that claims to give you a total strength, cardiovascular and
flexibility workout in only 4 minutes a day – instead of 45+ minutes. While the
makers suggest the machine can benefit everyone, it primarily targets the majority
of the population who don’t workout regularly or are sedentary. It’s been around
for 20 years but recently got some film time (product placement?) in the blockbuster,
IRON MAN 2. The machine is intricately designed with its central component being
an 85-pound flywheel, which works as a braking mechanism, creating resistance based
on the amount of force you produce...

You may remember we introduced you to Charles Meacham and Sarah Baxter’s “Walk With Pride” photo project earlier this summer. (You can check out the original piece here!). Well, our favorite traveling duo checked in with Instinct recently to tell us how some of their recent Pride stops have been going—and of course to share some amazing photos!

Athens Pride

The WWP project stopped in Athens to celebrate Pride, where thousands of people marched down the main city streets in support of LGBT Pride.

Turkey Trans Pride

Over 500 people came out in support of Turkey ’s first transgender march. The march was held to bring awareness to the rise in hate crimes toward the Trans community.  The parade was positively...
