“Once Upon A Time” introduces new gay character and it is …

I'm an OUAT fan.  Once Upon A Time has been a part of my Sunday nights since it debuted on October 23, 2011.  I am such a fan that I worked in a visit to Steveston, British Columbia as part of my April 2014 vacation to the Northwest for my 40th birthday celebration.  Steveston, a small quaint town just south of Vancouver, is Storybrooke, Maine, once the shops change some of their external facades and the geeks add in a coupe of CGI tricks like creating the library clock tower that doesn't exist in real life over the real life Steveston fishing shop.  I plan on going back again if another trip to the Northwest occurs.

What makes me a fan?  I am not sure. The writing, acting, and visuals are pleasing and the show has just become one of my guilty pleasures. My friend Jay and I text during the broadcast every Sunday and maybe that has something to do with why I watch.  But he gets mad at me since I usually predict what happens 110% of the time sometimes weeks in advance. Okay, so maybe the writing is not as imaginative as I would like for I still like to be shocked.  It wasn't like the last episode of Grim where someone loses their head. styles medium public images blog posts Adam Dupuis 2015 05 10 Captain Hook once upon a time 32545097 500 300 0

So is there enough going on in OUAT?  Pretty much, but what about a gay character?  Some people I have talked to have rolled their eyes at that thought and loudly exclaimed, "Why do you need a gay person in the show!?!"  I guess there is no need, but I just think it would be interesting.  There was a little hope when Captain Hook came into the series with his guyliner, but then he went and started dating Emma.  Others have said, sure, it would be a good twist on things to have a gay character, but who?

styles medium public images blog posts Adam Dupuis 2015 05 10 w630 still 1372457550 0 We have seen one gay character in OUAT, but it was rather predictable.  Mulan's girl crush on Sleeping Beauty (Princess Aurora) was a definite one sided lesbian / bisexual connection.  We haven't seen Mulan in quite some time.  Did ABC / Disney dabble in the gay pool just a little and never to return?

So if one of our fairy tale characters were to be written in as gay, who would it be?  One of the dwarves?  One of the fairies?  How about a male fairy?  Gay twins Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum?  Jiminy Criekett?  Or would it take the introduction of a new character that hasn't been in any fairy tale yet.  Maybe Henry will be gay?  The Sorcerer?

Does OUAT need a Gay Character?

If you could write for OUAT, would you make a character gay?  And if so who?

  1. Actually, Disney is usually always seen as homophobic, they rarely have gay/lesbian/bi characters in shows or movies. One of my friends is gay, and agrees with the homophobic Disney theory. I myself am bi, and I have seen season 7 of OUAT, and Alice and Robin are 2 of my favorite characters in the show. They make season 7 my favorite season, and those of you here who are writing out of homophobia, please, be respectful. You don’t need to take out your own sadness and hatred of yourself on other people.

  11. The “gaying” of a character

The "gaying" of a character is one thing. It can work if has no established love interest or the past is somewhat in question. I say that because the lack of anything definite makes any revelation possible. New information works when it doesn't overwrite anything we already know.

With that said, i personally think Mulan was not done well. I don't say that because I think it's bad for her to be gay. It just comes out of frikkin nowhere. They set her up working with Philip and staying with him so much that the implication was that she wanted him. When Aurora awakens and she renews her relationship with Philip, the connection to Aurora didn't seem clear to me at all. The implication was that she spent so much time with Philip before even meeting Aurora that she was attracted to him. There's nothing in her past that precludes such a connection to Aurora, except that it wasn't the way the story was naturally going. It felt tacked on terribly.

Ruby on the other hand was handled well. There's still a lot about her that we don't know. We know she ate one boyfriend once, and there's not been anyone else since. Plus, there was no real trend in her personal story toward anyone in particular. Dorothy is the same. There's no male connection in the real story, nor in the one presented here. If you're going to do something like this, these are the characters where it works best. If any of the others, say Belle for example, were to be outed, more explanation would be necessary to make it logical. And that could be as simple as showing that she had an attraction to another girl sometime in the past. If you don't do this, which is what happened with Mulan, it just doesn't work. For me, I dislike the Mulan outing not because of the "gayness," but because it didn't work logically. Just not a good outing.

As a family we have enjoyed watching Once Upon a Time together for a few years now.  Tonight's introduction of Ruby and Dorothy as a couple, with full lipped kissing, really dissapointed everyone in our family.  We like to see how all the fairy tales come together.  Tonight was a shocker though. Shame on you ABC for ruining an awesome show.  We will not be watching it anymore. What a waste.  This is no longer a family friendly series.

I agree with you. I have no problem with gay/lesbian whatever. What I have a problem with is them taking a well known character and making them gay for ratings. Introduce someone new and take it that route if you must. The second thing I have a problem with is my child watches this show and I feel that in this day and age, things are forced upon us. She may be whatever she is meant to be but at this point in life, she is to young to think about anything other that a short little true loves kiss…not a close up make out session.

Just wanted you to know this is most likely a tribute to Judy Garland who played Dorthy, she was the first gay icon, and I think it's neat that they did it that way. It's really not that big of a deal, and since ur obviously such a bigot, may all ur children turn out gay. My children watch this show to, but guess what, they don't care who other ppl sleep with, so it didn't faze them at all, maybe u should also teach ur kids to butt out of others bedroom choices.

I would say with them introducing Merida this next season there’s a definite possibility for another gay character there. Possibly even a match for Mulan. But its not necessary in the show. I do agree it would definitely help their ratings as it has dropped off lately and help include the LGBT community more into the show. I enjoy the show most of the time even if it is predictable.

Why can't OUAT have a gay character maybe it would help the show appeal to LGBT youth and adults alike.  I dont know about anyone else but i get so tired of the Male to female relationship dynamic being constantly shoved down my throat in every show i watch, i shouldnt HAVE to watch a "gay show" in order to avoid having to have the idea of the only relationships out there being straight ones.  Bring in a gay character I kinda think ursula could've gone gay or straight but she's gone now.

The story has also become quite predictable. My vote is for Pinocchio/August. It would work as we really don’t know much about him unless I missed some more of his backstory.

"Pushing our agenda" ???? ….. I don't know what agenda you are trying to push on people, but please do not put our entire community into that statement. The only agenda that I have is for all good hearted people to be treated with respect, fairness and kindness. By putting a gay character into a television show, there is nothing pushed onto people; it is simply representing more diversity. Nothing is being pushed on anybody! We should not live our lives hiding from bigoted "mom & pop America" and letting them continue to feel justified in being pissed that we exist. –No way–

My grandmother is in her 80s, and she is extremely open minded and kind toward al minorities. When asked how she didn't become a close-minded older person, she said, "That's easy. I just decided to be a good person." Not all mom and pop people are angered by our existence. Bigots are taught to hate, but they decide to stay that way. ….It always helps a cold heart to warm up to 'different' people by becoming familiar with them. Having more LGBT people on television is helping to show that gay people are good people too; it is not pushing anything. (Your comment sounds like it is written by an undercover bigoted or internalized-homophobic person, honestly.)  …Let's just embrace our community of really great and deserving people. If a**holes get mad about it, then that is their hate to work through– not ours.

So come on, let's embrace our own diversity. 🙂

To answer your question, I'm really up in the air.  As a gay male, I do appreciate it when TV shows have LGBT representation (i.e. Revenge – RIP, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, Brothers & Sisters, etc).  That being said, to have a gay character on a show just for the sake of having one I think is the wrong move.  I think OUAT creators did a great job giving us Mulan and her identity twist from the Disney movie.  I think if they were to bring back Mulan and have them explore her love life, that would be enough for me.  But I don't think they need to introduce a new character or make a well-known prince/princess gay just for the sake of it.

I don't think that they need a gay character just for the sake of having a gay character, just like I don't think that they need a black character, hispanic character, oriental character…..etc, etc, because it's the PC thing to do.

That being said, usually those who are gay gravitate to someone that they are interested in, and it is not necessarily someone who is available.   Here are a few options for a gay (non-stereotypical PLEASE!) character:

Mr. Smee / Friar Tuck / The Huntsman / The Three Little [Sex] Pigs (these could be VERY interesting: especially if the Wolf is changed into an adoring younger character in pursuit of one of the pigs….)

There are a gay people in all walks of life, why not in a fairy-tale land? Here's a thought… maybe very straight Will Scarlet could be zapped by an (evil?) spell  that makes him like men instead of women. Then over the course of time the spell wears off or someone finds a so-called cure and he remains bi. Aside from "Night Shift" are there any other shows on now where a gay character is a major character in the show and not just some side-character or minor player? I don't watch too much TV and that may be a naive question, but I'm tired of the gay characters having only small parts.
