Armie Hammer says there’s definitely a Call Me By Your Name sequel in the works.
While speaking to Variety at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, Hammer shared that he knows that creatives are working on the sequel to the 217 hit film.
“It will happen because there are already people working on it and trying to make it happen.”
But, Hammer said that he’s not personally involved with the film at this time. Even further, he has been told to tell very little about the project.
“How much do I know and how much could I tell you are two very different things,” he said.
“More than anything I trust the artistic direction to Luca and [novelist] André Aciman and to those guys who did such a good job handling it the first time around,” he also aded before saying, "I know a lot, but I can’t tell you anything.”
At the start of this year, film director Luca Guadagnino spread the idea that the sequel would follow an older Elio as he experienced the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s.
“I think Elio [Timothee Chalamet] will be a cinephile, and I'd like him to be in a movie theater watching Paul Vecchiali's Once More. That could be the first scene [in the sequel],” Guadagnino said on the subject.
That said, screenwriter James Ivory later shared his doubts about the possibilities of a sequel while at the BAFTA awards.
“I heard about it. I don’t know how you could make such sequels if they’re far in the future.”
He added: “It’s not possible to make Timothée [Chalamet] look likes he’s 40. All the make-up in the world and the rest of it and changing voice is not going to do it. I don’t know how.
“No one has contacted me. You have to think, ‘What does André Aciman think about that?’ It’s his creation. No one seems to know how he feels about it.”
Now that Armie Hammer confirms that plans are being made for a sequel, we can be sure that director Guadagnino and a few other creatives/executives are in favor of continuing the story. That said, projects are created all the time and fail to become reality.
While Hammer has confirmed the film is, at least, a living project right now, us fans should remain patient and wait it out in the darkness.
