Famous gamer Dominique McLean is making headlines again for proclaiming his sexuality and sexual preferences.
20-year-old McLean, nicknamed “SonicFox” in the gaming world, is at the top of his career. Last night, McLean was named the Best Esports Player of 2018.
While accepting his awarded at the 2018 Game Awards in Los Angeles, McLean made the proclamation that he’s gay, black, and a furry.
According to Metro Weekly, the British-born player said in his acceptance speech, “As you guys also may know — or may not know — I’m also super gay.”
He added, “I wanna give a super shoutout to all my LGBTQ+ friends that have always helped me through life. Obviously I’m a furry, so shout out to the furries…. Guess all I gotta really say is I’m gay, black, a furry — pretty much everything a Republican hates — and the best esports player of the whole year I guess. Thank you so much!”
McLean is at the top of the competitive video gaming world as he has won the Evolution Championship Series, an annual esports competition focused on fighting games, for the past three years. According to Queerty, McLean is renown for his skills in multiple games such as Injustice: Gods Among Us, Mortal Kombat X, and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
McLean officially came out as gay back in August when he shared a single tweet expressing his sexuality and asserting his place at the top of the gaming world.
“I’m gay,” he wrote, “also the best dbfz player on this f***ing planet don’t forget it [sic].”
As for the furry tag that he identifies with, it’s a subsection of the anime/gaming/geek communities. There is no one definition of furry fandom and culture, but most see it as a love of animal characteristics.
Some furries are people who like a certain animal or two to the point of having multiple dolls/toys/merchandise of that animal, and using it as a mascot for online aliases, social media accounts, and the like. Some other furries identify with certain animals to the point of taking that animal on as part of their persona or fursona, if you will.
For Dominique McLean, its important that others recognize these qualities of his personality and being while also recognizing his status as one of the world’s best competitive gamers. In doing so, he acts as representation for several minority groups, so we have nothing but thanks and congratulations for him.
