AMA to Push For Nationwide Ban on Conversion Therapy

Conversion therapy is a practice that has been debunked countless times and does more harm than good, so it’s only natural that the American Medical Association, or AMA, is pushing for a nationwide ban of the “therapy” across the United States, according to Metro Weekly.

The AMA recently voted in favor of conversion therapy bans, which will also help to develop legislation for states to pass and advocate for a federal nationwide ban. The AMA has long been opposed to conversion therapy, saying that it has no scientific basis and it has also heard from people who were victims of this practice that said that they were depressed, developed post-traumatic stress disorder, and attempted to commit suicide. AMA Board Member William E. Kobler, M.D. said in a statement “Conversion therapy has no foundation as scientifically valid medical care and lacks credible evidence to support its efficacy or safety.” Agreed – there is exactly zero evidence that this practice actually works. You know it’s nonsense when even the founder of a popular conversion therapy ministry comes out as gay and admits that the practice is harmful.

In addition to the AMA attempting a nationwide ban on conversion therapy, its members also announced plans to have more inclusive medical records for transgender patients, which can help identify the specific medical needs of trans patients which, in turn, will help not only their physical health but also their mental health.

This is most definitely a good thing as nobody should have to go through this and having the largest medical group in the United States back such a proposal will hopefully help. Eighteen states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico have all banned conversion therapy – let’s hope that the other 32 states (and the other territories) adopt the same stance.
