Birds of Prey’s villain is no longer gay but bisexual.

Back in July, we shared with you that Ewan McGregor’s villainous Black Mask would be portrayed as gay in the upcoming superhero film starring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. But now, it appears that has slightly changed.

We Got This Covered, the same entertainment news site that broke the original story and the story that Marvel’s The Eternals would have a gay lead, reports that changes have been made to Black Mask’s sexuality. While it was first reported that Black Mask shared a flirtation with fellow villain Zsasz, changes to the film post-test screenings show more going on. Now, Black Mask not only shows interest in Zsasz but superhero Black Canary too.

Currently, it’s unclear why the production made this change so soon before the film’s release on February 7, 2020. That said, it appears that the other openly gay characters, the before mentioned Zsasz, Rosie Perez as lesbian detective Renee Montoya, and comedian Ali Wong as her lover, are still going to be portrayed as gay.

These post-test screening changes do bring up the question of whether Birds of Prey’s questionable gay storyline has changed as well. As we reported before, test screening reactions and rumored Hollywood buzz brought up a curious storyline at the core of the movie and Black Mask’s motivation. But to prevent spoiling the yet to be released film, we won’t share that information in this article. Instead, we suggest those interested in knowing that entire situation click the link here.

In the end, we’re still getting an LGBTQ villain in the Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie. On top of that, bisexual men are getting representation and visibility. So, it’s not bad news for LGBTQ fans and fans of LGBTQ media.
