Will The First Female Headliner Win Over The Audience?

If you’re a closeted comic book geek like I am, you’re well aware the first solo-female headlining Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, Captain Marvel, is only two weeks away! Not only should we be stoked to have a female-driven film, but this means the end-all-be-all of a decade of films, Avengers: Endgame, will come six weeks afterwards! This is an exciting time to be alive and a devastating month ahead for my bank account.

Historically, the Marvel films have been heavy with testosterone. For the last ten years, we’ve watched Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and more men occupy our screens and possibly some roleplaying fantasies. The only two primary females to take a lead storyline in the superhero films have been Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Now, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) takes the titular captain who is the next person to save the world. The advertising for the film is bold telling you the film will be female dominated and some shout outs to Hillary Clinton’s presidential slogan: A play on “I’m with her” – “The world needs HER – a hero”. It’s in your face, but it shouldn’t be otherwise. Like, hello, it took two years to get a female superhero into the mix and she wasn’t even taken seriously until four years after the MCU’s existence.

From the beginning of the promotional releases, trolls from the internet have been coming in the masses. I can’t seem to scroll through any article surrounding the film without reading obscene comments such as “not my superhero!” or misogynistic lard, claiming a female cannot be one of the most powerful people in the world. Recently, haters of the never-before-seen-film have bombarded by fake reviews to make it’s score rotten. This is the exact same craze the Little Monsters pulled on another superhero film, Venom, in order to favor Lady Gaga’s Oscar nominated, A Star is Born, as they both premiered the same weekend. Today, actual early-reviews are pouring in and love is in the air.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Captain Marvel truly may be the most groundbreaking MCU film yet. Allegedly, the movie will touch hearts with 90s nostalgia, female empowerment, and cats! Yes, cats. While I believe some people may boycott a “girl” movie, there are going to be plenty of others who will double up on their viewings to prove a point. At this moment, I’m betting I’ll be one of them simply for the principal. I’m all for anyone being able to see themselves on screen, as I was once a gay little kid who never could connect with anyone. I’m stoked my nieces will be able to think of themselves as superheroes instead of media princesses and the like. Captain Marvel is a long time in the making, but it is really at the time when it’s needed the most. I’m so stoked to see this movie and cannot wait any longer!

If you’re like me and can’t wait for two weeks to see the film, Reddit has a pretty credible spoiler on the plot of Captain Marvel you can check out here. But, if you’re patient, Captain Marvel hits theaters on Friday, March 8th!

Side Note: This month, I got to tour Marvel Studios in California (in a jacket inspired by X-Men’s toxic character, Rogue) and happened to receive some amazing Captain Marvel swag…I wish I could tell you more but ratting on an exclusive tour from Marvel/Disney could likely get me banished from society. But, I did get to take a super cool photograph in the only area they allow. Check me out below!
