America’s only openly gay professional athlete is taking his skills to San Diego.

According to Out Sports, midfielder Collin Martin has signed with the San Diego Loyal Soccer Club and will be playing at the University of San Diego’s Torero Stadium with Loyal.

“Collin is a versatile player who can help our club in many different ways,” Landon Donovan, the San Diego Loyal Soccer Club’s Executive Director, tweeted. “He has experience in the MLS and USL & is a gifted midfielder who can make impactful plays at both ends of the field. We’re fortunate to welcome a player of his quality into our family.”

“When forming our roster, we wanted to build a team of players that would rival any in the USL Championship,” Donovan told USL, after announcing Martin and two other players. “The additions of Charlie Adams, Morgan Hackworth and Collin show our commitment to bringing San Diego a team that will be competitive from the first game of the season.”

Again, Martin is currently the only openly gay professional athlete in all of U.S.’s major sports. The 25-year-old soccer player came out as gay back in 2018 in preparation for the Minnesota United FC’s Pride night game.

“Tonight my team, @mnufc , is having their Pride night. It’s an important night for me — I’ll be announcing that I am an openly gay player in Major League Soccer. #soccerforall,”  the then 23-year-old wrote.

But being openly gay is not the only reason that Martin is a notable player. As USL Championship writes:

“Originally a D.C. United Homegrown signing, Martin has made 41 appearances in Major League Soccer in his career, including 26 over the past three seasons with Minnesota. The 25-year-old also spent time in 2019 on loan with the Championship’s Hartford Athletic, where he made seven appearances and recorded nine key passes. Martin averaged 50.1 passes per 90 minutes with the Athletic, with an accuracy rate of 86.5 percent.”
