Whitney Houston’s friend and music collaborator is sharing her thoughts on the Robyn Crawford romance.
Earlier this month, we shared with you the fact that Robyn Crawford is releasing a memoir about her relationship with Houston. In the book, Crawford confesses that she had a romantic and physical relationship with the late singing sensation. But the two broke up due to Houston’s growing popularity and the fear of damaging her career with scandal.
With news of Crawford’s memoir has spread, Diane Warren’s name is making the rounds. Warren is a Grammy and Emmy-award winning songwriter who rose to prominence in the 1980s. She has worked with a number of artists such as Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Tina Turner, Oliva Newton-John, Patti LaBelle, NSYNC, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston.
Not only was Diane Warren a music collaborator with Houston, but she was also a friend to the late star. With that insider knowledge, she now shares her perspective that Houston would still be alive today if she were still with Robyn Crawford.
“I just heard about [the memoir],” she told Entertainment Tonight at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Patron of the Artists Awards in Beverly Hills, California, on Thursday. “Robyn loved Whitney and… from what I knew of the two of them, it’s sad that Whitney could not live her truth. It’s heartbreaking.”
“I think personally — I mean, not that I know anything — but I think if Robyn would have been there, I think Whitney would still be around,” Warren said. “She really cared about her.”
Warren’s sentiment mirrors words shared by Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown. While promoting his own memoir, titled Every Little Step: My Story, Brown shared similar thoughts to Warren’s.
“I really feel that if Robyn was accepted into Whitney’s life, Whitney would still be alive today,” he told Us Weekly in 2016 “She didn’t have close friends with her anymore.”
It seems there’s a lot of memoirs circling around from people who used to know Whitney. But those closest to her say that Crawford is perfectly entitled to sharing her story of the late singer.
“She’s entitled. If she wants to write a book, who knows what the book is about? It’s her story,” said Houston’s sister-in-law, Pat Houston, to ET’s Kevin Frazier last month. “Is it fair to say she can’t write a book? No, it isn’t. She had a relationship with her, so whatever it was, you know, she’s deciding to write a book. Hey, she can do that.”
As for Crawford, she says she decided to write a book about her relationship with Whitney as a way of honoring and remembering her time with the star.
“I watched her rise to the top of her game and I felt compelled to share who that woman was behind all the fame,” Crawford said. “I never envisioned speaking publicly about my life and then I asked myself the question, ‘What would Whitney want? Would she understand [that] the time is now?'”
