Do you sound gay? Does it matter? I am sure there will be comments on the Facebook page like:
- it doesn't matter what you sound like
- here we go, more heteronormative propaganda
- oh, you mean like see Tarzan – hear Jane?
- can't we just love one another and stop making femininity a negative?
- love yourself for who you are and not how you compare to others
Yep, we get it, but why do some of us sound gay and others don't? And is it okay to not like your voice and try to sound more "straight" (that's going to rub someone the wrong way) or should you just suck it up and live with it? And if you want to change your voice to be more "masculine" (oh that one too), does that mean you feel ashamed to be gay or want to hide your sexuality? We work out, dye our hair, starve ourselves, gain weight, are fashion label whores, and wear make up and even do drag to change how people see us so what's wrong with considering changing how we sound?
One week from today New York will get its first viewing of the Sundance Selects film "Do I Sound Gay?" Here's a the trailer for the thought provoking new movie.
I think my favorite quote from this clip is, "I love my gay voice. I don't have to come out to anyone. I say hello and it's a done deal."
How did this film come to be?
It’s a question that’s often discussed and that’s never really had an answer: Why do so many gay men, regardless of their age, race, nationality or background, ‘sound’ gay?
Well, after a successful Kickstarter campaign, a new film by David Thorpe which is due to premiere next month (July 10) in New York is delving into that very question.
After a painful break-up, the journalist decides to confront his own anxiety about his own ‘gay’ voice, enlisting acting coaches, linguists, friends, family, total strangers, and celebrities like George Takei, in attempt to discover the answer. – Attitude.co.uk
For more insight on this video, the film maker shared this clip with The New York Times.
As a former psychology teacher, I find this topic and the research very interesting. I hope to see this movie some day and to be honest, I have more of a drive to see this video than I do for HBO's The Normal Heart which I still haven't viewed.
