‘Endgame’ Features MCU’s First Gay Character–But Is This Really A Step Forward?

Avengers: Endgame is on its way to becoming the highest-grossing picture of all time. It’s more than worth noting that the final movie in the 22-pic “Infinity Saga” features Marvel’s first gay character, played by director Joe Russo.

About twenty minutes into the film, five years after Thanos has wiped out half of all living things, we see a grief support group–like a 12-step meeting, moderated by Captain America. Russo’s character tells the group he lost his partner in Thanos’s devastation, and he’s started dating other men.

Is this a step forward? Is it not enough? Does it feel like an insulting handout?

Obviously, it would have been preferable to see an LGBTQ+ superhero. Tessa Thompson‘s Valkyrie was publicized as bisexual before the release of Thor: Ragnarok, but that amounted to nothing.
