Family Convicted For Trying To Kill Gay Teen

Three Israeli brothers are facing punishment after they tried to kill their younger brother as a “family honor killing.”

According to the Jewish Press, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in the chest and legs by his older brother outside the Beit Dror LGBT youth hostel in Tel Aviv last month. The teen was quickly rushed to Ichilov hospital while in serious condition. But after going through surgery, the boy’s condition was stabilized.

According to an investigation by the authorities, the boy, who’s from the town of Tamra, has been facing pressure from his family because of being gay. This eventually led to a murder conspiracy by the boy’s three older brothers.

Thankfully, the brothers were eventually caught, according to the Israel National News. Four days after the stabbing, two of the teen’s older brothers turned themselves into the police. The 23 and 27-year-olds were charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. A third brother, 24-year-old Jamal Cnaani, was later charged with conspiracy to commit murder for his role of planning the stabbing.

Again, the brothers have repeatedly mistreated their younger sibling because of his sexual orientation. They physically abused him, by beating and kicking him to unconsciousness, several times. They also kidnapped the teen once in May of this year after he sought to seek police assistance. Eventually, the teen fled and moved into the Beit Dror hostel in Tel Aviv. But unfortunately, his brothers later found him.

The Israeli LGBTQ+ Youth Organization (IGY) says that the stabbing should be called what it really is. A hate crime.

“Exactly 10 years after the murder at Bar Noar, today an LGBT youth was stabbed while exiting a shelter. We pray for the wounded teen and stand with Beit Dror in this difficult time. This stabbing was no coincidence. This is a hate crime against the LGBT community as a whole. This is the price for the incitement and LGBT-phobia we hear all the time,” IGY claimed.

When news of the stabbing first broke out, some pro-LGBTQ politicians expressed sorrow over the incident and similar ones faced by their LGBTQ peers.

“The horrific acts of stabbing an LGBT teen by his brother and threatening of MK Eitan Ginzburg [who is gay], just because of their sexual orientation, reminds us of that the hate and ignorance towards the gay community is still here, and is encouraged by the hatred of rabbis, who don’t understand the damage they do,” tweeted Yael German, MK for the Blue and White party.

  1. I love that this article is about a brutal attempted murder of a gay teen, and the picture this blog uses is a sultry young stud? What?

    • The picture used is of a young man of color. Specifically, an arab teen as is the focus of the article. And frankly, pictures of that description, that aren’t copyrighted, are hard to find. Plus, I didn’t view this picture as a “sultry young stud” but simply a shrouded figure. Which, fits with the vibe of the article. There are better battles to fight.
