Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jeff Rohrer is sharing more about why he decided to come out last year.
In November of 2018, Rohrer came out as gay. The former linebacker chose to come out publicly through an emotional interview with Outsports. That said, the former Dallas Cowboys players said he had already come out to family and close friends.
”The kindness of my friends and my family and my teammates,” Rohrer told Outsports. “It’s just been f***ing ridiculous how nice they have been, and how supportive. And how they don’t care about any of that. They just love me, they always have. Nothing’s changed. Nothing’s changed.”
”To know that at a time like this, that they have my back, it’s f***ing amazing,” added the retired athlete. “I never expected it. I figured the world is f***ed, but it’s not. It’s amazing. It’s f***ing amazing.”
Now, Jeff Rohrer is sharing more about his life. Specifically, Rohrer’s “modern family,” in which he co-parents in the same house with his husband and ex-wife, is being explored in an NFL Films documentary. That said, there’s plenty of time devoted to talking about his struggles in the closet.
“It was something that I suppressed so hard for so many years that I really had no idea,” Rohrer said about his younger years. “My story was you kind of, go on a track of who you’re supposed to be, not who you want to be.”
That said, Rohrer eventually overcame that struggle after leaving the sport. He went on to build a family with his ex-wife and current husband, skin-care expert Joshua Ross. (Sidenote: Rohrer’s marriage to Ross makes him the first recorded case of an NFL player marrying someone of the same gender).
“I’m so happy, so proud that I’m out, so proud that I’m gay. And I’m just going to go forward.”
