Fringe Mormon Group Targets LGBT People, Porn Watchers

There are extremists in basically any group imaginable, and the Mormon church is no expection. Recently, a fringe group of Mormons who who refer to themselves as the Deseret Nation, or #DezNat, have come out of the woodwork and their message is… rather frightening as they threaten LGBTQ people and people who watch porn with violence, according to The Daily Beast.

Some LGBTQ members of the LDS Church are frightened of the existence of #DezNat, saying that they fear that the group may commit murder due to their religious beliefs. A trans woman, Allison Wyles (her last name was changed to protect her identity) had this to say:

Despite #DezNat meaning Deseret Nation, the group itself is not a nationalist group, but instead a group of controversial, ultra-conservative Mormons whose common trait is their devotion to the Church of Latter-day Saints.

A man who goes by the name of "Brother Mike" investigated the DezNat hashtag on Twitter and discovered that the group describes themselves as Mormons who do not conform to the usual teachings of the LDS Church and is preparing "the world politically, socially, economically, for the second coming of Jesus."

John Paul Bellum, who goes by JPBellum on Twitter, is the person who started this #DezNat movement. His only interest is The Kingdom of God which, I assume, is why he created the hashtag #DezNat. He tweeted about things such as how immigrants should only speak English and that women should remain abstinent until marriage. What decade does he think he's in?

Many people who use #DezNat has a picture of Orrin Porter Rockwell, as he was an important figure in Mormon doctrine in that Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, told Rockwell that as long as he does not cut his hair, nothing can wound him so Rockwell was believed to have murdered numerous apostates and Smith's enemies as well as attempted to assassinate a Missouri governor.

As if that isn't bizarre enough, under #DezNat, some post pictures of Bowie knives, as Brigham Young carried one around his waist and in a dream, he used it to cut the throats of two apostates. However, #DezNat members also use the knife as a symbol of an oft-omitted aspect of Mormonism called "blood atonement," which basically means that in Mormon belief there are sins and crimes that are so horrible that they can only be absolved through spilling blood. You may have probably guessed by the title of this post, but the #DezNat members aren't too fond of LGBTQ people and people who watch pornography so by posting about blood atonement, they are threatening to actually kill non-heterosexuals and porn watchers.

Lovely.

Personally, I'm not worried about #DezNat because there is not much of a Mormon following here in New Jersey and even if there were I'm fairly certain that they wouldn't be this extreme. However, we must always be wary of any group with such radical views, as they tend to be unpredictable and effective in gaining followers.
