What can bring the cowboy from The Village People and a gay social app together? An opera of course.
The show is billed as an unauthorized musical parody of the popular phone app. According to press notes, the libretto production aims to celebrate the "eponymous gay hook-up app that has sweepingly altered the course of modern gay intimacy." – PLAYBILL.COM
How would you write an opera about your time wasted spent on the social app of your choice? Some of us would have more performers than others.
Through bawdy humor, GRINDR The Opera will follow the stories of four gay men, each searching for a different kind of human connection via the app. According to producers, their stories also explore "many issues of great depth that have become common themes as the human heart struggles to catch up with the age of the smart phone." – PLAYBILL.COM
GRINDR The Opera will receive a staged reading on April 7 and 9 in New York. The reading will be hosted by Randy Jones, the original Cowboy from the disco group Village People. Not sure if there are any tickets remaining, but if you would like to know more about the show and how to get tickets, go to PLAYBILL.COM.
