Is there a safe place on earth?  The vacation destination of Acapulco was hit with violence over the weekend.

Three people were killed and five more injured when armed gunmen attacked a gay festival in Mexico's southern tourist resort of Acapulco, police said.

Attackers stormed the "Reina Gay" festival taking place in Tres Palos on the edge of Acapulco on Sunday, opening fire on the crowd, a local police official told AFP.

Three men aged 23 to 33 were killed and five others were hospitalised with injuries, the official said.

Authorities have had to suspend classes at some rural schools near Acapulco in recent weeks and install security forces at others due to a spike in violence near the Pacific coast port, which has the highest homicide rate of any city in Mexico.

Acapulco is located in Guerrero state some 250 kilometers (155 miles) from Ayotzinapa, the town where 43 Mexican students studied at a rural teachers college before disappearing last year. – ahram.org

Our thoughts are with the survivors, the wounded, and those that had to witness this attack.  Will we find out in the next few days or weeks or at all if this attack was a crime of hate and bigotry or were these celebrants just in the wrong place at the wrong time, in a region where people have already disappeared without cause?

Let's keep an eye on this one.

  1. Hi, this was not an attack

Hi, this was not an attack against gay people specifically. I lived for 3 months in Acapulco back in 2007. The reason this place ranks as the most violent in Mexico is due to the cartel war. Think of this, a gay festival full of gay people and only 3 got killed? Gunmen clearly had their targets set.

Thanks for thank you for your insight.  I had seen comments like this before but since I have zero experience with Acapulco , I could not make any statements like yours.

It's terrifying!!! When I was there, there were shootings in the mall, on the beach, on the streets, all cartel related. I am Mexican myself now living in Miami. Back in the 80's and 90's Acapulco used to be an obligated vacation paradise for all Mexicans, specially people from Mexico City, but the situation has turned so bad in the last 15 years nobody goes there anymore. Very sad.
