Amazon CEO and recipient of the Human Right's Campaign National Equality Award recently donated the maximum amount of over $10,000 to Senator Cory Gardner of Colorado, according to INTO.
Cory Gardner, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, a position with a great deal of power, has voted to prevent same-sex couples from adopting children or jointly planning their estate in Colorado. As well as that, he has also moved to block a bill that would prevent discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation and has been vocal about his dislike of marriage equality.
Bezos' donation was not for the upcoming midterm elections, but instead for Gardner's reelection campaign in 2020.
During his receiving of the National Equality Award last year, Bezos mentioned in his speech the fact that he and his wife donated $2.5 million to fight for same-sex couples to be allowed to marry in Washington and said that it is imperative that we expose inequality when we see it and work to fix it.
Gardner, unsurprisingly, is against transgender people, so it is very surprising that Bezos made the donation a mere month after Amazon UK released a set of guidelines that encouraged employees to support their trans coworkers, in which employees are encouraged to use correct pronouns and allow trans people to use restrooms that match their gender identity. So, why did Bezos, a man who received an award for supporting equality and founder of a company that supports LGBT rights, donate to such an anti-LGBT politician? Who knows… either way, it's not good.
