Lady Gaga: I Slept Through Oscar Nominations

Lady Gaga says she slept through the announcement of her two 2019 Academy Award nominations for A Star Is Born Monday morning.

Speaking to the LA Times, Gaga explained that with travel and upcoming performances of her Las Vegas residency, Lady Gaga Enigma, she’s been on ‘showbiz time’ in an attempt to get some rest.

So, while the rest of the world was wide awake early Monday, she was sleeping in.

Apparently, her agent/fiancé, Christian Carino, usually leaves her notes in the morning “if there’s nominations.”

“I woke up around 8:30 and I didn’t know anything about it,” she told the Times

She says she assumed she didn’t get nominated even though she’s been on practically every ‘Best Actress’ list this season.

Note: The LA Times reports a note was eventually found.

“So I called my manager, Bobby — cause Bobby's good with bad news — to see what was going on,” she added. “And then he told me all the nominations, and I just started crying.”

When asked why, after winning Grammys, Emmys and Golden Globes, the Oscar nod was important to her, she said, “There's really no award that is more esteemed than the Oscar in acting, and for music, it is also extremely special.”

And speaking of special, even though her co-star and director, Bradley Cooper, was left out of the ‘Best Director’ category, she says everyone associated with the film considers him 'the best.'

“Well, you know, you never know what’s going to happen,” said Gaga about the apparent directing snub. “But at the end of the day, he knows that he’s the best director in my eyes, and in all of our eyes as his cast. I know that he’s so happy that we’ve all been nominated and that the film was recognized and we all feel really, really beyond elated for the recognition.”

In an interview with the New York Times, the actress acknowledged her family for the work ethic that got her to here.

“These are not Oscar nominations for me, these are Oscar nominations for the Germanottas,” Gaga shared with the NY Times. “I come from an Italian-immigrant family, and this feels like a very big win for them. This film was a lot of hard work, and I wouldn’t know that hard work if I didn’t know the hard work of the lineage of my family.”

The 32-year-old superstar made history this year as the first artist to be nominated in both the ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Original Song’ categories at the Academy Awards.

In the last iteration of A Star Is Born, Barbra Streisand won Golden Globe Awards for both ‘Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy’ and ‘Best Original Song’ for co-writing “Evergreen.”

But when the Oscars rolled around, la Streisand was left out of the ‘Best Actress’ nominations, although she did score the statue for ‘Best Original Song’ again.
