Maine Congressman Michaud Declares He’s Gay In Op-Ed

Rep. Mike Michaud (D-Maine), who is running for governor in 2014, came out publicly today via op-ed in a Maine newspaper!

The congressman, who becomes the seventh openly gay member of the House of Representatives, decided to reveal he's gay to the public after a whisper campaign was launched about his sexuality.

Here's a clip from his op-ed in the Bangor Daily News:

I wasn’t surprised to learn about the whisper campaigns, insinuations and push-polls some of the people opposed to my candidacy have been using to raise questions about my personal life. They want people to question whether I am gay.

Allow me to save them the trouble with a simple, honest answer: “Yes, I am. But why should it matter?”

That may seem like a big announcement to some people. For me, it’s just a part of who I am, as much as being a third-generation millworker or a lifelong Mainer. One thing I do know is that it has nothing to do with my ability to lead the state of Maine.

And if seeing someone from my background, in my position, openly acknowledge the fact that he’s gay makes it a little bit easier for future generations to live their lives openly and without fear, all the better.”

We couldn't agree more and we congratulate you, sir!

If Michaud is elected in 2014, he'll become the first openly gay person to win a governor’s race.

Do you think the congressman's announcement will impact his chances of winning governorship one way or the other in Maine, Instincters?

  1. I am even more PROUD to be

I am even more PROUD to be called a Mainiac from The Dirigo State O Maine.  Pine Trees and Lobsters.  I had a chance to run for the State House when I lived in Augusta Maine.  I passed up the chance since I was living in the closet at the time.  This has re-sparked my passion for politics.
