Mexican President Declares Fight Against Homophobia

On Friday, May 17th, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (known as AMLO to many) declared it to be National Day of Fighting Against Homophobia, Lesbofobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. That’s a lot of phobias!

Additionally, AMLO presented a series of actions that the Mexican government will implement in support of the LGBTQ+ community according to Desastre.mx. Among such actions are much needed worthy services for LGBT people, labor inclusion actions that guarantee opportunities regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity, joint work with teachers to eradicate discrimination, implementation of protocol of action against hate crimes in the prosecutors and prosecutors.

AMLO said:

Nobody can stay behind, we will respect rich and poor, those who live in the countryside and city, of all classes, sectors, of all religions, free thinkers, atheists, agnostics, of all currents of thought, and of all sexual orientations and gender identities. It is a government that represents all and all Mexicans. Therefore, this day is about this issue that has to do with freedoms and not allow discrimination, regardless of the way of thinking of each person, we must be respectful of freedoms; It is not a matter of tolerance, it is a matter of respect for freedoms.

At his side during the declaration were Alejandro Encinas, undersecretary of Human Rights, Population and Migration; Claudia Sheinbaum, head of government of Mexico City; Alejandra Haas, president of the National Council to Prevent Discrimination; and Genaro Lozano, journalist and LGBT activist.

When questioned, the president spoke up in favor of marriage equality sharing that he will push for federal law to make it legal across the land, but that current laws will be obeyed and respected. Just today, Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, setting an example for other countries who have been historically conservative with their LGBTQ+ rights.

AMLO was elected in a historic presidential election with a landslide victory of 53% in 2018. He is the first elected president to mention the LGBTQ community in his speech, although he did not run his campaign directly on expanding the LGBTQ agenda.
